“I am grateful for the opportunity to step into this new role. I am looking forward to continuing to connect with students and families through athletics, and partner with them in navigating this unique and challenging school year.” - Interim Athletics Director Kate Williams ’01
A distinguished educator, coach, and athlete, Kate is commitment to creating positive experiences for every student who participates in Catlin Gabel athletics programs
Catlin Gabel welcomes educator, coach, and alumna Kate Williams ’01 to the role of Interim Athletics Director for the remainder for the 2020-21 school year.
In her previous role as Assistant Athletic Director, Kate collaborated with Athletics Director Sandy Luu in creating and implementing a new athletics curriculum, and Kate will lead that effort this year; she will support coaches and athletes on the virtual curriculum and on-campus practices, and navigate the shifts in OSAA competition. Sandy will return as Catlin Gabel Athletics Director in 2021-22.
Kate has been Assistant Athletics Director for the past three years, and Head Girl’s Basketball Coach for seven seasons. Her background as a social worker and behavior therapy interventionist, and her leadership training in athletics, also make her ideally suited to support student-athletes at Catlin Gabel.
Prior to working at Catlin Gabel, she coached for three years as the First Assistant at Wheaton College (MA), where she was a player throughout her college years. Kate is a member of the Oregon Athletic Directors Association, the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, and the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association. She is currently the Girls’ Basketball Chair for the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association.
Kate brings to her work a deep connection to the school that spans three generations of her family. She is the daughter of a long-time faculty member, a Class of ’01 graduate, and parent of a Lower School student.
Kate will continue to coach the Varsity Basketball team during the seven weeks of the new OSAA season. An athletics assistant will work with Kate during that time in order for her to function as an Athletics Director as well as a coach. An Assistant Director of Athletics position will be filled when students return to campus full-time and re-engage in regular competitions.
