Catlin Gabel is proud to welcome Connie Kim-Gervey, Ph.D. as the school’s Interim Director of Equity and Inclusion. Connie has over twenty years experience in uncovering and overcoming systemic, organizational, and interpersonal barriers to engagement, equity, and inclusion.
Connie will partner with the administrative team to plan and execute our strategic plan to help the school further its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, support DEI issues as they emerge in the school, help with employee and board training, connect with teachers and staff who are leaders on DEI initiatives, and serve as a community resource for the Parent-Faculty Association and current parents. As an essential member of the administrative team, Connie will help Catlin Gabel continue to infuse equity into its institutional issues and decisions. She begins as the interim director, a half-time position, on December 6, and will serve the school in this capacity through June 2022.
Connie has worked in advocacy, research, and consulting positions since 1998, with nearly all of her work focusing on equity, diversity, and inclusion. Her most recent academic work examined the role of ethnicity and ethnic identification in civic participation and voting behaviors. She has worked with audiences of all ages, using observational, qualitative and quantitative techniques to center the voices of non-dominant peoples.
Connie has a master’s degree in education from Harvard and a Ph.D. in developmental psychology from New York University. She is also a therapist specializing in centered counseling for BIPOC, People of Color and LGBTQAI2+.
The school is grateful for the effort of the Search Committee, which was chaired by Barbara Ostos, Assistant Head of School. Committee Members were Traci Kiyama, Upper School Mathematics Teacher; Jen Yoken, PFA Member and Jewish Affinity Group Leader; J.R. Anderson, PFA Inclusivity Co-Coordinator; and Tim Bazemore, Head of School.
