Tiffany is one of only three students to receive the award this year.
The FIRST student engineering organization has announced that Catlin Gabel School senior Tiffany Toh is a 2021 recipient of The Dr. Bart Kamen Memorial FIRST Scholarship. She is one of only three students to receive the honor this year. The award supports students majoring in either medicine or biomedical engineering who have participated in previous FIRST programs; Tiffany is planning to major in biomedical or electrical engineering at Yale University starting in fall 2021. The scholarship provides $10,000 annually for up to four years of college.
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology) is a global nonprofit organization that engages students of all ages in robotics challenges that build skills in science, technology, and engineering. Close to 100,000 students participate in FIRST programs each year.
Tiffany was previously honored by FIRST when she was named one of ten global Dean’s List winners in 2020, the highest individual honor presented by FIRST Robotics. She was recognized for her technical and community leadership, and for being a positive role model for peers. This is Tiffany's 10th year involved in the FIRST robotics program.
Tiffany is currently the Engineering Program co-president, and has also served as Mechanical Manager, Outreach Manager, Chairman’s Manager, and Drive Coach. She also holds the record for logging the highest number of hours in one build season for the Catlin Gabel Robotics team, 1540 the Flaming Chickens.
"FIRST helped me find what I’m truly passionate about, Tiffany says. "For the longest time, I was set squarely on a medical education track; my four years on FRC 1540 opened my eyes to the world of engineering and I simply can’t give it up now. My time on Catlin’s robotics team has been transformative and incredible - I’m so excited to take the skills I’ve developed here into a field that combines my passion for innovation with my passion for medicine."
