Upper School

Welcome to the Upper School!
Catlin Gabel’s Upper School demonstrates that progressive education and college preparation go hand in hand. The most accurate measure of the quality of a school is its alumni: at Catlin Gabel we are proud to graduate students who are intellectually, socially, and ethically ready to make a difference in their post-high school world. We develop critical thinkers, empathetic agents of change, and civically engaged young leaders through a highly challenging independent curriculum and a wide array of nationally renowned co-curricular activities.

An outstanding school does not seek to excel in only one area of the curriculum: high school is a time for students to explore a variety of intellectual, creative, and physical pursuits and find interests that spark a passion. We offer a remarkable number of classes—over 130 different core and elective offerings plus an additional 32 through our membership in the Global Online Academy. We seek to inspire a lifelong love of learning, and our outstanding faculty and staff model this on a daily basis. At Catlin Gabel, there is no back row in the classroom, and there is a shared expectation between teachers and students that each class is a democratic learning environment—the students’ voices are central to what we do here.

Teachers and students genuinely enjoy each other’s company; it is not unusual to see a lively discussion spill out of the classroom and continue across the quad. We have incredible facilities on a tranquil campus that inspires learning and a sense of place. All of this combines to provide a unique experience. I invite you to explore this section of the website to get a feel for the student experience in the Upper School. Better yet, come and see for yourself.
