Catlin Gabel students will represent the state of Oregon in the National Championships in Washington D.C. after winning the Regional Science Bowl on February 23 at the University of Portland. The winning Catlin Gabel team competed against fifty high school teams from around the region, and broke the Westview H.S. five-year streak.
The National Championships take place in April in Washington D.C. As part of their victory, the Catlin Gabel team receives an all-expenses paid trip to the nation’s capitol to participate in the nationals competition.
Science Bowl is a fast-paced academic bowl that tests student knowledge in all aspects of science: Math, geology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, and more. The competition is round-robin style and takes place over the course of a full day. Read more about the BPA Regional Science Bowl competition.
In addition to the first-place team, a second Catlin Gabel team competed, finishing in the top 12.

In addition to the team awards, Avi Gupta was recognized as an All-Star for being one of the top six individual performers in the morning rounds.
The team issued a statement, saying, “We would also like to recognize US Science teacher Becky Wynne, who has been mentoring both Science Bowl teams in preparation for this competition! We would also like to acknowledge US Science teachers Marion Edens and Joey Grissom for supporting us on the day of the competition.”
This year marks the 28th year for the Regional Science Bowl. Science Bowl is a national competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, and administered in Oregon and Southwest Washington by the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA). Read more about the 2019 National Science Bowl.
