The following message was sent to the Catlin Gabel community on Wednesday, October 10, 2018.
Dear Catlin Gabel community,
At Catlin Gabel School, our greatest priority is to provide an educational environment in which students feel safe, and free of misconduct and harassment in all forms. This is an important part of who we are as a school and a community.
We write to inform you that we have received reports about sexual misconduct by a former faculty member who left Catlin Gabel over 15 years ago. We are deeply troubled by these reports and sympathetic to the survivors, and we are taking action. The Board of Trustees has retained an independent investigator, attorney Lori Watson, to engage in a broad inquiry that will not be limited to any one individual or time period at Catlin Gabel. When the investigation is complete, the Board will share information with the community including any immediate action steps.
We strongly encourage anyone in our community with knowledge of any sexual misconduct by a Catlin Gabel employee at any point in the school's history to speak with attorney Lori Watson. Any concerns brought forward will be treated with sensitivity and support. You can contact Lori Watson by email at Lori@Watsonlawpdx.com or by phone at (971) 291-7672. Alternatively, you can report without using your name at this number: (503) 972-1581.
We take these reports very seriously, and want to hear from you. We will continue to support those alumni who have come forward and will stand with them and all survivors of sexual misconduct. We are deeply sorry for their pain.
We are committed to understanding any past failures in the prevention and handling of misconduct. Catlin Gabel today is proactive in preventing employee misconduct, and we have many employee policies and procedures in place to safeguard our students. We will continue to emphasize these efforts while remaining open to listening, and learning what more we can do.
If you have general thoughts and questions for the school, please reach out to Assistant Head of School Barbara Ostos at firstname.lastname@example.org or (503) 297-1894 x5002.
We sympathize with all members of the community who have suffered. Anyone who comes forward to share their concerns will have our full support for doing so.
