Catlin Gabel School is pleased to welcome Derek Kanarek as the new Upper School Academic Dean. In this role, Derek will lead professional learning, academic policy, instructional coaching, and curriculum alignment.
Derek came to Catlin Gabel from Newark Academy (Livingston, NJ), where he served as the Mathematics Department Chair, 12th grade coordinator, Global Speaker Series coordinator, and faculty co-chair of the Technology Leadership Team. He is also a doctoral student in Education Leadership at Teachers College, Columbia University, under the advisement of Dr. Eleanor Drago-Severson. Derek’s research and teaching in his doctoral work lives at the granular level of school leadership and professional development, using our understanding of how adults develop psychologically to inform the work of teacher leaders, staff developers, and building-level administrators.
Derek holds a B.S. in computer science and B.A. in communication from Rutgers University (New Brunswick, NJ), a Masters of Teaching from James Cook University (Townsville, Australia) in secondary school math and IPT education, and an Ed.M. in educational leadership studies from Teachers College. He has also completed the Internal Coaching and Advanced Coaching Intensive with the Columbia University Coaching program.
