Catlin Gabel supports National School Walkout, March 14
Posted 03/08/2018 09:00AM

A 17-minute student-organized walkout is planned for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 14, at Catlin Gabel School. The walkout will recognize and honor the 17 students and teachers killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, one month ago, on February 14.

Upper and Middle School students will be leading this optional walkout, followed by small group discussions about issues involved with the Parkland tragedy.

Each Catlin Gabel community member will have the option to participate or not. Every teacher and student's individual choice will be respected. Parents are invited to join us on campus for this event.

Catlin Gabel supports this action. For students participating, there will be no negative consequences to walking out. Division heads and other administrators are planning to support this voluntary walkout in age-appropriate ways.

Lower School students will also have the option of spending 17 minutes engaged in activities promoting peace and safety. Lower School parents are welcome to join us in our activities. You are also free to come and get your child to participate in the Upper School gathering, but the content that will be discussed there is beyond what we will be discussing in Lower School classrooms (exception—fifth graders will have the option of participating with the Middle and Upper School students with one of the fifth-grade teachers, with parent permission.)

Beginning School parents will be welcome to come and get their child and gather in the fir grove to sing peace songs with us if they choose. Otherwise, it will be a regular day in the Beginning School in all respects.
