May 5, 2017 - The U.S. Department of Education announced today that Catlin Gabel senior Nikhil Murthy has been selected to represent Oregon as a 2017 Presidential Scholar. He will be recognized at a U.S. Presidential Scholars Program ceremony in Washington D.C. on June 18.
The Presidential Scholar award is one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students. Only two scholars are chosen from each state – one young man and one young women – out of 3.5 million students expected to graduate from high school this year. More than 5,100 students qualified this year, based on academic performance and other criteria.
The award recognizes Nikhil for demonstrating “outstanding academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship, service, and contribution to school and community.”
For their official announcement, the U.S. Department of Education asked Nikhil to cite the teacher that had the greatest impact on him. He chose his Junior and Senior year Biology teacher Dr. Jeff Crosby.
