Assessment of Inclusion and Multiculturalism
At Catlin Gabel, we believe that being a diverse community committed to equity and inclusion is an essential condition for educational excellence. We understand that diverse perspectives lead to stronger thinking, communication, collaboration, and broadening of cultural skills, and that every member of our community deserves to feel safe and valued. As a learning organization, we seek feedback to help us identify ways to improve, and we take action to better achieve our mission. In the spring of 2013, Catlin Gabel independently decided to implement the Assessment of Inclusivity and Multiculturalism tool to determine how to strategically improve its diversity work.
The Assessment of Inclusivity and Multiculturalism (AIM) is a comprehensive tool that engages all school constituents in evaluating inclusivity and multiculturalism. It delivers tangible results the school can use to plan for building and sustaining inclusivity in an independent school community. The AIM process for our community encompassed a survey in fall 2013, further collection of data through focus groups during that winter and spring, and analysis of the collected data through the summer and fall of 2014.
Our results confirmed that the school is positioned well, with an involved and invested school community of students, families, employees, and trustees who value the educational opportunities and philosophy of the school. The results also outline specific areas and needs we must consider to become even stronger and more inclusive.
