Odes to Garden Vegetables
Fifth graders at Catlin spend the year studying the food system, in an integrated study called "Pitchfork to Plate."
The first unit looks at the decisions that farmers make, moving on throughout the year to investigate packaging, processing, transportation, marketing, and controversial current events relating to food. Concurrently, students get their hands dirty and creativity flowing with a hands-on garden study that spans the school year. Students maintain their school garden by harvesting potatoes, planting garlic and onions, cooking squash, taking on their own small-group projects, and using their senses to delve deep into the garden ecosystem. For their culminating project of the fall, we asked students to investigate Pablo Neruda's poem "Ode to the Onion" and write their own odes of appreciation to delicious edible plants. The results are informational and inspiring!
