We’re so excited to celebrate the holiday season with our alumni community! Alumni, parents of alumni, and former faculty and staff are invited to join us at our East Campus for a festive evening of fun and flannel. We’ll have both ceramics and watercolor classes available, demonstrations in the ceramics studio, and time to mingle over food and drinks. We’ll be joined by Tim Bazemore, Head of School, who will share on life at Catlin Gabel today and what it might look like in the near future. We hope you’ll join us in your favorite flannel and invite your fellow Catlin Gabel friends!

Please join Barbara and Dale Rawls in the Ceramics studio during the holiday social. We are excited to show off the amazing ceramics studio. There will be hand-building and wheel throwing demonstrations, and opportunities for you to get your hands in clay. You are welcome to hand-build or throw on the potter’s wheel. We are looking forward to sharing the wonderful studio with you!
5:15 to 6:30 pm Bird Watercolor Painting with Ronna Fujisawa (The Northern Flicker)
Welcome to this wonderful opportunity to paint with Ronna Fujisawa, a long-time landscape and bird watercolor painter. She has an MFA from OCAC in Applied Craft and Design, 2019. She teaches painting and mixed media classes at The Bird Alliance of Oregon, The Northern Virginia Bird Alliance, Catlin Gabel Community Arts Program for adults, and art classes at Catlin Gabel’s Lower School. Ronna has her own teaching practice called Salty Water Art, where she offers Zoom and in-person watercolor classes on a weekly basis. In this class, students will paint a fun close up of a Northern Flicker, learning how to mix neutral colors, as well as techniques of layering colors to create various feather patterns. Your instructor, Ronna Fujisawa of Salty Water Art, will be your guide through the step-by-step process of painting. All supplies will be included, as well as a photo of the bird we will refer to.

PAE Living Building in downtown Portland, hosted by alumni and current parents: Afton Walsh ‘03 (Walsh Construction), Irfan Tahir ‘87 (Apex Real Estate Partners), Vladimir Pajkic (Parent, ZGF). Beyond industry networking and Catlin Community building, it is a chance for us to embrace Catlin's commitment to lifelong learning through experiential education led by industry experts. We will learn, discuss, and debate how this building represents the best of our industries and the central role that buildings can play in advancing community. Alumni Wine Walking Tour
Saturday, September 30 | Small group tours start every 15 minutes beginning at 2 pm.
Join us as we tour campus sampling wines from alumni-owned wineries and learning about how alumni have made today's Catlin Gabel campus possible. You'll have a chance to taste wines from Apolloni Vineyards, Elk Cove, Knudsen Vineyards, and Sokol Blosser, and if you visit every tour stop you will be entered in a drawing for tastings and bottles of wine from our generous alumni vintners.
Small group tours will start every 15 minutes beginning at 2 pm. If you have mobility concerns and would like to utilize a golf cart or travel at a slower pace, please arrive by 2:40 pm. The tour will visit the building site for the new Community Center for Athletics and Wellness, so we recommend wearing comfortable walking attire. Mixed Media Art Class with William Hernandez
Join William Hernandez, Lower School parent and art instructor with Catlin Gabel’s Adult Community Programs, as he provides an introductory mixed media class. Supplies will be provided, and you are welcome to bring any of your own as well.
Supplies needed: 9” x 12” piece of construction paper in any color; assorted paper: solid colors and patterns/prints (you can use wrapping paper, newspaper, etc.); images of facial features, people, hands, etc., from magazines and newspapers, or draw and cut your own; paint (watercolor, tempera or acrylic) and a few paintbrushes; glue; scissors; optional: colored pencils, markers, or crayons.

Alumni Community Art Show and Reception
Join us in the Creative Arts Center Gallery for a reception celebrating the Alumni Community Art Show. 15 alumni from the classes of 1964 to 2021 will showcase works in textile, ceramics, sculpture, painting, video, film, and computer gaming. We'll have wine tastings from alumni wineries Apolloni Vineyards and Elk Cove Vineyards and light bites. It will be a wonderful time to meet and mingle with fellow alumni and former faculty. The art show will be open from Friday, June 23 through Friday, June 30.

AlumniTalks: Watercolor Painting with Ronna Fujisawa (Virtual event)
Wednesday, February 22, 5:30 to 7:00 pm (Pacific)
In this class, participants will paint a Bohemian Waxwing alongside Ronna, who will guide you through the process. Learning how to mix watercolors to create realistic colors found in nature can be done with a very minimal palette. We will learn how to make grays with these simple steps, and an understanding of how to achieve loose, transparent, and luminescent paintings.
Ronna is a Catlin parent to a middle schooler, as well as a teacher of painting and mixed media classes at Catlin Gabel Community Arts Program on East Campus since 2020. You can learn more about Ronna at her website here.
Before class, please print a color print of the bird as reference / that fits the size of your watercolor paper. For more information and a copy of the image to print, please email alumni@catlin.edu.
Supplies: Watercolor paints ( you may use what you have but I recommend good quality paints and paper for best results) *see document for more information; Watercolor paint palette with a large mixing area; Watercolor paintbrushes in various sizes; Watercolor paper at least 9x12” or 11x14"; Cheaper scratch Watercolor paper or sketch book for painting studies and making swatches of color; 8x10 ink carbon paper one sheet for tracing (You may trace the bird by putting carbon paper ink side down on watercolor paper and color copy on top, pressing not too firmly, and trace the bird); #2 sharp pencil or mechanical pencil for sketching or tracing; White eraser; Paper towels; 2 Water pots; 1” artist tape or blue painters tape; Board about the same size or a bit bigger than your paper size to tape your paper to cardboard, masonite, or foam core; Hairdryer or hot air gun to dry quickly.

virtual alumni Science Series: The Future of Computing with Abram Falk '99

Join retired faculty Paul Dickinson and Dave Corkran as they moderate this discussion with Abram Falk '99, covering quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and other related topics based on your submitted questions.
Abram “Alfie” Falk ’99 was a lifer at Catlin Gabel, along with his twin sister Jani '99 and little brother Phillip '02. He then went on to Swarthmore College for his B.A., Harvard University for his Ph.D. in Physics, and the University of California Santa Barbara for a postdoctoral fellowship, where he was awarded the Elings Prize in Experimental Science. He is now a research staff member at the IBM T. J. Watson Research center in Yorktown Heights, NY, where he studies quantum photonics and quantum computing. His achievements include the discovery of a new type of optical excitation in carbon nanotubes and a new class of artificial atoms based on crystal defects in wide-gap semiconductors. He has published 30 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has been granted 20 patents by the U.S. patent office.

virtual alumni panel: Alternative Housing Models in the Pacific Northwest

Today’s most common housing models haven’t changed much from mid-century concepts of suburban tract housing and urban multifamily developments. Though these traditional approaches fall short of meeting the needs of all Americans, alternatives have been slow to emerge. Join our panel with alumni Owen Gabbert ’02, Erik Granum ’03, and Afton Walsh ’03, moderated by Taylor Kaplan ’05, to hear some of the new ways these builders and developers are formulating residential projects to provide a wider array of housing options in the Pacific Northwest. The panelists will discuss some of their projects, and there will be time for a Q & A.

2021 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD RECIPIENTS
Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award - Gil Kelley ’71 has served as the Chief Urban Planner for several West Coast cities (Portland, Berkeley, San Francisco and Vancouver, BC). After graduating from Catlin Gabel, he pursued education in urban studies and planning at Evergreen, Harvard and MIT and has spent over four decades in public and private sector roles, guiding the planning and development of cities in the US and abroad. He has served as Practitioner in Residence at Portland State University, taught master classes at the University of Amsterdam and maintains an independent consulting practice, advising cities and private clients on urban planning and design strategies, climate action and sustainable development, as well as housing and economic development. He is also a member of the Oregon Investment Board. He and his wife currently live near Hood River, Oregon.
Distinguished Alumni Community Engagement Award - Katie Sharff ’98 MD, is an Infectious Disease physician at Kaiser Permanente in Clackamas, Oregon. Dr. Sharff received her BA in Biology at Williams College, her MD at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and completed Internal Medicine residency and Infectious Disease fellowship at Oregon Health Sciences University. As a physician with Kaiser Permanente, she has been the Director of Antimicrobial Stewardship for the NW region, leading a program that was awarded the Infectious Disease Society of America Center of Excellence Designation, an award only bestowed to 131 hospitals nationwide.
Dr. Sharff diagnosed the first case of COVID-19 in Oregon and only the 2nd known case of community transmission in the United States with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Throughout the pandemic she has continued to contribute to the medical field and served as the Infectious Disease physician lead at the All4Oregon mass vaccination site at the Oregon Convention Center. She continues to lead vaccination work for the Kaiser Permanente region and serves as a sub-investigator on several COVID-19 vaccine trials at the Center for Health Research. Additionally, she co-chairs the KP National Quality COVID-19 Vaccine Medication Safety Workgroup to impact patient safety related to COVID-19 vaccines. Dr. Sharff has appeared in several local and national media outlets throughout the pandemic to educate the public on COVID-19 and vaccines. Katie enjoys long-distance running and spending time with her husband, 2 children and bernedoodle dog.
Distinguished Younger Alumni Award - Sprinavasa Brown ’02 is a recognized change agent, community leader, and advocate for education with a deep passion for social justice, racial equity, and solving complex problems facing Communities of Color. Holding a BA from Oberlin College in Biology and African American Studies and an MA in Communication and Leadership Studies from Gonzaga University, Sprinavasa has experience advising and working alongside local agencies and regional governments to further engagement with Communities of Color. In 2015 she co-founded ELSO, Inc. as a space where Youth of Color have the opportunity to see people who look like them as their science mentors.
