Are you wondering how you’re going to describe yourself in 650 words? Set yourself apart from the rest of the applicants? Write about your dreams without using clichés? Over the course of three mornings, rising seniors will receive hands-on training in how to write a well-crafted college admissions essay. You will reflect on your own experiences, values, and relationships. We’ll explore how to turn these reflections into a personal essay that responds to one of the five Common Application prompts. Working individually with the instructor and in small groups, you will read and discuss actual essays presented to colleges for their review, listen to and read advice from the “experts,” brainstorm ideas, and think carefully about what you want your essay to convey about you and your experiences. Each student will focus on writing an essay that reflects who you are, what you care about, and the dreams you have for your future. There will be ample opportunity to meet one-on-one with the instructor to brainstorm ideas or get feedback on your draft in progress. All you will need is your computer, and your creativity! At the end of the course, you will have a head start on one of the most challenging tasks of senior year.

Where do ideas come from? How do we turn an idea in our mind into something people can hold in their hands and read? How do we know if the idea in our mind would be best as a poem, a story, an essay, a comic, or a story that is told instead of written? How might words and images work together to tell a story? Or even words and music? Can movement help get our creative juices flowing? Come explore these questions and more as we delve into writing, explore different genres, dabble with art, learn about the publishing and book-making process, and gain inspiration from other writers and artists, as well as the world around us.
