Blythe Butler

Co-Director of College Counseling

Blythe has been a college counselor at Catlin Gabel since 2010. She worked for ten years prior at Lewis & Clark College as Associate Dean of Admission, where she was involved with all aspects of the recruitment and application process. She has served on boards, committees, and in advisory roles for the National Association of College Admission Counseling; Association of College Counselors in Independent Schools; Enrollment Management Department at University of Oregon; and Pacific Northwest Association of College Admission Counseling. She received her bachelor's degree from Willamette University, where she sits on the alumni association board of directors, and earned her MA in nonfiction writing from Portland State University.

Joanna Frady

Co-Director of College Counseling

Before moving to Portland, Joanna worked 12 years at Fayetteville Academy in Fayetteville, NC, as Director of College Counseling and Academic Advising. She was also the co-coordinator for the Southern Association of College Admission Counseling Virtual Counselor Workshops in NC. Prior to becoming a college counselor, she worked in undergraduate admission as an assistant dean at the College of William & Mary; assistant director at Niagara University; and assistant director at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Joanna earned her bachelor’s degree in English and History and an MA in American Studies from the College of William and Mary. She received an MEd in School Counseling from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Registrar

Prior to arriving at Catlin Gabel in 2016, Kymberly Herbst was on the founding board of two different theater companies. She acted, directed, and taught children’s theater classes for both companies for 10 years, while also serving as the board treasurer. Kym initially was an interim Middle School and then Upper School theater teacher at Catlin Gabel before eventually stepping into the role of Registrar, where she enjoys working with and supporting students through the college process. Kymberly received her BFA degree in Acting from the University of Southern California.

Maureen Reed

English and American Studies Teacher, Writing Coach

Maureen Reed has taught writing to high school, college, and graduate students for over twenty years, the last two of them at Catlin Gabel. She has extensive experience at working with students on application essays and enjoys this work because of the opportunities the process creates for building self-awareness and setting goals. She held a Fulbright Scholarship in Germany in 2004-2005, and, before coming to teach at Catlin, taught writing courses and served as a fellowships advisor at Lewis & Clark College. Maureen has a B.A. in English and Art History from Rice University and earned M.A. and Ph.D degrees in American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin.

Ana Garcia

College Counseling Administrative Assistant

Ana started her time at Catlin Gabel in the Fall of 2023 and has worked in the education field in a variety of roles. Most recently, she spent two years as the Family Partnership Coordinator and one year as the College and Career Readiness Coordinator at St. Andrew Nativity School in northeast Portland. Ana has a Master of Arts in Higher Education and Student Affairs from the University of Portland and is a first-generation college student and first-generation American.
