Student Highlights 2019-20

Every year Catlin Gabel students achieve awards and distinctions for their remarkable talents. This year was no exception. Some of these accomplishments are highlighted below:

Academic & Co-Curricular Achievements

Senior Britt Masback was named a 2020 U.S. Presidential Scholar, a distinction awarded to only 161 students nationwide each year. This marks the fourth consecutive year a Catlin Gabel student has been recognized. He also earned a national Prudential Spirit of Community Award for his volunteer work in founding and leading the Youth Educating Police organization.

Ten seniors were National Merit Semifinalists: Luke Aitchison, Anousha Greiveldinger, Arjun Jain, Will Leonard, Jane Madden, Tristan Peng, Aarushi Phalke, Zack Robinson, Dylan Smith, and Amy Wang.

Four students won Beaverton Public Library’s annual fall writing contest: Eighth graders Donnie Reuther and Zoë Stascausky and tenth graders Liam Dwyer and Seth Knights.

The Chess Team took first place at the Oregon High School Chess Team Association Championships in the 4A/3A/2A division.

The Flaming Chickens robotics team took first place at the Girls’ Generation competition, in which only female team members can drive or fix the robot. Team member Tiffany Toh ’21 was named one of 10 Dean’s List winners at the FIRST Robotics World award ceremony, chosen from approximately 90,000 students who competed in FIRST.

An app, called AbleMail, designed by seniors Annika Holliday and Tristan Peng, won the Congressional App Challenge for Oregon’s Third Congressional District. The app helps support individuals with disabilities to use email platforms autonomously.

Athletic Awards

Sophie Wand ’21 took gold at the Maccabi Pan Am Games in Mexico City, which brings thousands of Jewish athletes together. Sophie represented the U.S. as part of the Under-18 soccer team. She also received the Harry Glickman Scholar Athlete Award, which is given annually to two Jewish scholar-athletes who live in Oregon, and are junior or senior high school students.

Three State Championship Teams: Boys and Girls Varsity Soccer teams in the 3A/2A/1A division; Girls Varsity Swim Team in the 4A/3A/2A/1A division.

Individual first place swim awards went to Akira van de Groenendall ’23, Eva Carlson ’21, and Lizzy Cook ’21. A first place team award was won by Alyssa Sanchez ’23, Defne Alpay ’20, Greta Bogdanki ’22, and Lizzy Cook for the 400 Freestyle Relay. State records were set by Eva Carlson in the 200 Individual Medley and Lizzy Cook in the 50 Free and 100 Free.

Cross country runner Lila Fenner ’20 won the individual title at the State Championships.

Kenya Sei ’20 smashed a long-held school record in discus, throwing 145' 4", nine feet farther than the previous record, which was set in 1978. He is also named one of Oregon's top high school football players, as part of the Lincoln High School team.
