Equity in Action

Equity and inclusion are integrated across classrooms, grade levels, and community spaces. Our goal is for every student, from preschool through 12th grade, to engage with developmentally appropriate and intellectually challenging equity and inclusion content through curriculum, student leadership, and extracurricular programs.

Here are a few of the ways this work shows up in each division and across our community:

Beginning & Lower School

  • Third grade teachers have expanded an existing Water Unit about Celilo Falls focused on the importance of caring for our planet’s water systems to integrate consideration of Indigenous rights and environmental justice.
  • Relaunching student government, fostering leadership and voice in our youngest learners.

Middle School

  • Employee and student leaders of affinity groups, clubs, and activities are trained in structuring and facilitating meetings, strengthening student leadership and belonging.
  • One-on-one mentoring supports students in feeling accepted, confident, and valued in the school community.

Upper School

  • Affinity and identity groups are building cross-campus solidarity and engaging in meaningful dialogue.
  • A student-led advocacy group, with faculty support, is working to integrate Indigenous studies into multiple subject areas.
  • The Equity and Inclusion team helps students bring forward meaningful, equity-centered projects—such as inviting a visiting author to deepen engagement with issues of immigration and civic responsibility.

Parent and Community Engagement

  • Parent Faculty Association (PFA) Inclusion Coordinators foster warmth, dialogue, and relationship-building across family affinity and discussion groups and within the broader parent community.
  • We honor the diverse cultures and identities at Catlin through cultural observances.

Catlin Gabel’s equity and inclusion efforts are rooted in our commitment to belonging for all. We do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, disability (with reasonable accommodation), sexual orientation, gender identity, national or ethnic origin, or any other legally protected status in admission or employment. Our work engages the full diversity of our community—centering lived experience as essential to learning—while fostering respectful dialogue and inclusion across all groups.
