Articles and Databases

Use these databases to find articles published in academic journals, newspapers, and other print sources. Often you can gain access to the full text of the article online.

Search full-text articles from scholarly, peer-reviewed journals and reference sources in a wide variety of subjects. Try clicking the box next to the search window to limit your search to peer-reviewed articles.

Gale Health Reference Center Academic

Multi-source database provides access to the full text of nursing and allied health journals, plus the wide variety of personal health information. Try clicking the box next to the search window to limit your search to peer-reviewed articles.

Print Journals in the Library

The library subscribes to Astronomy, Discover, Science News, Sky & Telescope, and Scientific American. Print copies are kept for one year.

Public Library of Science (PLOS)
Provides searchable, full text access to several important open access journals on medicine, biology, genetics, pathogens, and more. Click on a journal title under PLOS Journals, and use search field that appears in upper right hand corner of screen.

PubMed Central
Freely accessible database offered through the National Library of Medicine. Provides limited full text articles, primarily in biomedical and life sciences.

National Geographic Encyclopedia of Space

Detailed, illustrated entries cover topics including deep space, our solar system, technologies and space exploration. Includes an appendix of maps and an index. Reference book in the library. (REF 520 GLO)

Sky & Telescope

Print journal in the library.

Skywatching
A guide to the sky, highlighting the planets and constellations of our solar system. Includes up-to-date tables and detailed constellation charts. Book in the library. (520 LEV)

U.S. Naval Observatory Astronomical Applications Department

Provides current astronomical data and information about astronomical and related topics, such as moon phases, time zones, and an astronomy glossary.

Biographies

Dewey Ranges: Biography collection (e.g., B DARWIN), REF 920

Biography Resource Center
Provides full-text biographical and critical articles on thousands of scientists. Articles may be printed or emailed. Database available at the library terminals on campus. Visit the US Library Moodle page for login and password.

Gale Virtual Reference Library
Search entries in full text reference sources, such as encyclopedias and dictionaries. You can choose to search in the Complete Dictionary of Scientific Biography.

Notable Twentieth-Century Scientists (4 vols.)

Biographies of prominent scientists focus on their discoveries and accomplishments. Entries include lists of works by and about the scientists. Four volume reference book set in the library. (REF 920 NOT)

Herb Society of America Encyclopedia of Herbs & Their Uses

Alphabetical guide to herbs includes color photos, plant description, and information on optimal growing conditions. Reference book in the library. (REF 581.6 BOW)

Peterson Field Guides: Pacific States Wildflowers

Field guide to wildflowers in Washington, Oregon, and California. Provides color illustrations and descriptions of habitat, plant characteristics, and growing regions. Reference book in the library. (REF 582.13 NIE)

The PLANTS Database
This large database from the USDA provides standardized information about the vascular plants, mosses, liverworts, hornworts, and lichens of the U.S. and its territories. Includes special topics such as invasive species, threatened and endangered plants, and culturally significant plants.

CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics

Comprehensive resource for tables and facts about elements, formulas, and much more. Reference book in the library. (REF 540 CRC)

Encyclopedia of Science, Technology and Ethics (4 vols.)

Informational entries, useful appendices, and an index. Covers medicine, technology, engineering, and the ethical and political issues associated with science and technology. Four volume reference book set in the library. (REF 503 ENC)

Gale Virtual Reference Library

Search entries in full text reference sources, such as encyclopedias and dictionaries. You can either choose a publication to search, or search all resources. Science sources include Complete Dictionary of Scientific Biography, Encyclopedia of Science, Technology, and Ethics, Complete Human Diseases and Conditions, and The Gale Encyclopedia of Mental Health.

Atlas of Oregon, 2nd ed.
Colorful, detailed maps, diagrams and charts provide data on human geography, the economy, and physical geography throughout the state. Good source of information on population, growth of cities, agriculture, and ecology of the state. Reference book in the library. (REF 912.795 ATL)

Dictionary of Geological Terms, 3rd ed.

Provides short definitions of geological terminology. Reference book in the library. (REF 550.3 DIC)

Encyclopedia of Gemstones and Minerals

Alphabetically arranged entries provide photographs of minerals accompanied by information on their properties and geographic sources. Reference book in the library. (REF 553.8 ENC)

Geology of Oregon, 5th ed.

Chapters describe the geological features and history of Oregon by region. Chapters include the Willamette Valley, Cascade Range, and many other regions of the state. Book includes color photographs, illustrations, maps, and a glossary. Book in the library. (557.95 ORR)

United States Geological Survey (USGS)
The USGS website is a vast resource, containing current information about geological events, hazards, and many maps of sites around the world. You might try the “Library” tab, which contains links to reference sources and databases both in and outside of the USGS.  

Human Anatomy and Physiology

Human Body: An Illustrated Guide to its Structure, Function, and Disorders

Medline Plus Medical Encyclopedia
Searchable database of information on a wide range of human medical conditions. Information is intended primarily for a non-medical audience. Provides diagrams and photographs.

Merck Manual
Provides information on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of a range of human diseases. Reference book in the library. (REF 616.07 MER)

Merck Manuals Online Medical Library
Online version of the Merck Manual (see above). 

Physicians' Desk Reference
This book, known as the PDR, provides alphabetical listings by manufacturer of drugs commonly prescribed by physicians. Each entry provides descriptions, clinical trials information, dosage, precautions, and adverse reaction information. Reference book in the library. (REF 615 PHY)

Audubon Society Encyclopedia of North American Birds
This comprehensive encyclopedia contains entries on individual birds, bird families, prominent ornithologists and naturalists, and terms and topics in the field of ornithology. Reference book in the library. (REF 598 TER)

John James Audubon’s Birds of America
Online version of the classic text. Includes access to color illustration plates and descriptions.

PhysicsCentral
This website, a publication of the American Physical Society, has accessible articles about a variety of topics, such as chaos, space and the universe, light, sound, and matter.

World of Physics (2 vols.)
Encyclopedia of alphabetical entries about topics in physics. Includes biographical entries about specific physicists. Two volume reference book set in the library. (REF 530.03 WOR).
