Gambol 2012
Portland. Inspired.
March 3 at the Governor Hotel
We are excited to unveil a livelier format for this year’s Gambol. The new look and feel celebrates Portland’s weird...er…unique…qualities. The Governor Hotel 3rd and 4th floor ballrooms are getting full-on Portland-centric makeovers.
Doors open at 5 p.m. for patrons, who get to bid early on silent auction items including class art projects, job shadows, and party sign-ups. General admission opens at 5:30 p.m. with continued silent auction bidding, a golden ticket raffle, and wall of wine roulette. Guests will be treated to a full spread of complimentary appetizers, microbrews from Ninkasi, and wine from Catlin Gabel family wineries Apolloni Vineyards, Elk Cove Vineyards, Hamacher Wine, Ponzi Vineyards,Garden Vineyards, and Wahle Vineyards. As the silent auction closes, guests will make their way to theater-style seating for a fast-paced live auction and special appeal for financial aid. The speedier live auction leaves plenty of time before the night is over for mingling, dancing, and a buffet dinner with open table seating. Late night munchies will be sated by sweet selections from Voodoo Donuts, Cupcake Jones, and Ruby Jewel.

INSIDE/OUT Lecture Series
Thursday, February 2, 7:00 pm, MS Commons
It’s becoming harder to live an attentional life. Busy, scheduled lives and technology have complicated our lives and made it more difficult to attend.
It’s problematic for the adults, for sure, but what about youngsters, both when they are in class, on fields, and at the dinner table?
This evening will consider the effects of ADD and ADHD on adolescents at home and school. What do attentional issues look like at home for parents, especially as they relate to family life and just as importantly, the intersection of home and school? What do ADD/ADHD look like in the classroom?
Dr. Jetmalani joined the OHSU faculty in 2007 as Director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Education after practicing in the Portland area since 1988. In August of 2009, he was given the Joseph Professorship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Education and in September of 2010 he assumed the position of interim Director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Catlin Gabel Care Committee
Are you looking for a cool way to contribute to the Gambol?
We are looking for one-day job shadows for Upper School students to attend during summer break. Student leaders brainstormed ideas for placements that would provide real-world applications for the skills and knowledge they gain at school. Their suggestions include medical research, industrial engineering, publishing, computer technology, advertising, architecture, graphic design, fashion, film, and food service. The one day you offer this summer could open a world of possibilities for a student. Please let us know if your Upper School student has a specific request and we’ll see what we can do! For more information or to express interest in offering a one-day job shadow at your workplace, please email Cath Swanston at cathswanston@gmail.com. Thanks!

Revels is just around the corner. Excitement is in the air!
Revels - December 15, 7 - 8:30 pm
Cabell Center Theater
Our students have spent the last month rehearsing for Revels. They have learned songs in Spanish, Chinese, Swahili, Hindi, Arabic, Latin and Ladino (a medieval Spanish spoken by Sephardic Jewish communities) as part of their language classes. Revels and the rehearsals that lead up to it are aligned with our broader aims that include: 1) to further the musical education of our students, 2) to honor the diversity within our school, and 3) to foster a sense of school as a community by asking all students to work together towards a common purpose. A winter festival, common to cultures throughout the world, offers a perfect opportunity to further the children’s education by focusing on these three aims. We deliberately include music that has cultural and historical significance. Each year Peggy selects a few new musical pieces and the children help with the choreography on all but a few numbers. Other selections stay the same, serving as anchors of familiarity and predictability for the children. We hear anticipatory exclamations such as, “You get to do the sword dance in the fifth grade!” It is also interesting to note that every child has an opportunity to sing, dance AND play a musical instrument over the course of the program. All children learn all parts!
Thank-you, parents, for your support of the effort that goes into Revels and for your celebration of the children in the larger context of the world during this holiday season.
Please read the following “tips” to help this year’s event go as smoothly as possible.
*Limited seating: Because seating is limited, we would appreciate you inviting immediate family only. We have 607 seats available -- this means that we only have about 3 seats per family. You may consider leaving babies, toddlers and older siblings at home. If you will be bringing Middle School age siblings, they must sit with you during the performance. Fire Code requires that we not overcrowd the theater. Seats will be on a “First Come, First Served” basis. Please do not “save” seats for other families – apparently this has been an issue in the past.
*Videotaping: We are happy to announce that once again the performance will be professionally videotaped. Copies of the DVD will be for sale for $30.00 and will be charged to your account. Consider leaving your camcorder at home and sit back and enjoy the show! (If you wish to bring your own video recorder, please be considerate of other fellow parents in the audience and sit in the back row of the theater.)
To order a Revels DVD please email Julie the following information: Student name, grade and number of DVDs. Your account will be charged $30.00 for each DVD.
*First and Second Grade sections: We have reserved sections on the main floor for parents and siblings of each of our first and second graders. We are assuming the 1st graders will sit on a lap.
*Third Graders in balcony: We ask that third graders and their parents sit upstairs in the balcony. The students will be cued as to when to come downstairs to perform.
*Fourth Graders to be seated in the aisles: We invite the parents of the 4th graders to sit in the seats nearest their 4th graders at the beginning of the show. Fourth graders need to meet in the Beginning School at 6:30 pm.
*Fifth Graders will be sitting in the aisles along the perimeter of the theater while they are not performing (not with their parents). Parents of fifth graders may sit in any of the unreserved seating areas. Fifth graders need to meet in the Beginning School at 6:15 pm.
*Where should we sit If we have kids in two grade levels? If one of your children is in the fourth grade, we ask that your family sit in the assigned aisle seats nearest your fourth grader. Otherwise, you may simply choose which grade level you want to sit with. Make this decision now, as the first grade class literally counts how many seats will be needed and exactly the right number will be reserved. Don’t worry about your children missing their cue to go on stage — the announcements will be very clear. There will be time for students to make their way down the stairs if they are seated in the balcony.
*Parking: Please carpool if at all possible, as parking is limited.
*Pre-performance wait time: You may be bringing your student early to get ready for the show. The doors open at 6:00 pm.
*Honoring the performers: To honor the performers, please turn off cell phones and remain seated during the performance. Bathrooms are located behind the theater for emergencies. Please encourage children to visit them before the show begins!
*Young children: We ask that you keep your children (other than the 4-5th graders) with you during the evening. You may wish to bring something quiet to do with your child while you are waiting. We ask that very young children sit in your laps.
*What happens if it snows? No worries – an alternate performance date will be announced. Please check the web site to see if Revels is cancelled.
*The day after: Coming to school Friday morning after Revels may be delayed a bit if you like, a tradition at the Lower School! Of course teachers will be here at the usual time.
*Dress Code for Revels
First through Fourth grade:
• Boys – Dress pants, belts if needed, a dress shirt with a collar. They will not wear shoes or socks
• Girls – dressy dresses, skirts or very dressy pants. They will not wear shoes or socks (footless tights are ok)

Revels
December 15, 7:00-8:30 pm,
Cabell Center Theater
It’s that time of year again! This is a time when the Lower School joins together to celebrate many of the cultural traditions celebrated by families within our community. Revels began in 1986 as an all-school event in an attempt to move away from the typical “Christmas pageant” and move towards a performance that honors diverse practice. Many Catlin Gabel teachers that are still here were a part of this inaugural Revels. This evening celebrates the changing of the seasons through singing and dancing. Our revelry honors the celebrations that occur within the cultural practices of our community and highlights the many gifts of our children. We look forward to seeing you on the 15th!
If you have any questions please email Peggy McDonnell or Julie or call 503-203-5102.

I write with a special opportunity to host Catlin Gabel's Costa Rican exchange student, Nimsi.
Nimsi is here as a 10th grader for the 2011-2012 academic year from the Cloud Forest School in Monteverde, Costa Rica. She is bilingual in English and Spanish, and loves spending time with other kids – especially helping with Spanish. She is a 15–year old dynamo, who is soaking up every moment of her year so far. She's just finished a great fall soccer season and will likely not participate in winter sports.
Please, contact Spencer White directly if you are interested in inviting Nimsi into your home.

Snow day closures
The safety of students is our primary concern. Parents should make personal weather-related safety decisions for their families. If it does not seem safe where you are, keep your children at home. If conditions deteriorate in your neighborhood during the day, you may pick up your children early (making sure to notify the division administrative assistant).
Sometimes school is in session, but bus service is canceled because of inclement weather. A message is posted on the website as early as the decision is made. If buses are canceled in the morning, they are also canceled for the afternoon regardless of weather conditions.

Visiting Ghanaian Fantasy Coffin Sculptor Eric Adjetey Anang
Eric Adjetey Anang is a design coffin maker (fantasy coffins) from Accra, Ghana.
ErIc joined the Catlin Gabel community this week. He crafted a coffin on the deck of the barn in the form of a 7'-long, 3'-wide carpenter's hand plane. He had lots of help from students in grades 1 through 5 as they had shop class on the barn deck. Click on the link below to take you to a beautiful flip-book of Eric's life and shop in Ghana.

The Gifts of ADHD
A parent recently came to talk to me about how she has moved through a wonderful journey of worrying about her child who has ADHD to feeling that in many ways it is a blessing. It is my belief that parents go through a series of steps when they learn their child may have Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). In the beginning, parents may feel a sense of denial or panic. Some parents may feel alone or become amazing information seekers. Either way there is often an initial struggle with coming to terms with what the diagnosis means. Read entire article here.
Non-Solicitation Guidelines
To minimize the number of solicitations to families and businesses, the school policy requests that all faculty, staff, parents, and students refrain from soliciting the school community for organizations and causes not related to the school. While there are many worthwhile and important causes to support, individuals and families vary on what those are. Faculty, staff, parents and students must consult with the director of development regarding any fundraising efforts at Catlin Gabel.
Gifts to Teachers and Coaches - Giving personal gifts to teachers and coaches invites misinterpretation, favoritism and inequity. To avoid these unhappy situations, the PFA encourages families who wish to express their appreciation to a teacher or coach to do so with small, inexpensive tokens such as a note, a card or a child’s drawing. For those who would like to do more, the PFA suggests families consider giving to the school’s Annual Fund in honor of a particular teacher or teachers. Please do not send class emails regarding a group gift to a teacher or coach.
Student Fundraisers - We are happy to support students raising money for activities and events such as prom. However, students need to contact Eileen Andersen for approval before initiating fundraisers. The answer is almost always yes unless their plan would negatively affect the school’s overall fundraising goals.

An Afternoon with Bats and Dr. Pete
Saturday, October 29, 3:00 - 5:00 pm
Dr. Peter Ritson (our very own 7th grade science teacher) and his wife, Christine Portfors, associate professor of biology at Washington State University Vancouver, host their annual Bat Talk from 3 to 5 pm on Saturday, October 29, in the Dengerink Administration building, room 110 at Washington State University in Vancouver. This event is an especially fun fall activity for families with children ages 4 – 12 and is free and open to the public.
While the season often calls for depicting bats as blood-sucking, vicious creatures, now families have an opportunity to see live bats up close and learn why these animals are largely misunderstood. In addition to teaching guests about bats, Christine and Peter will offer fun children’s activities including arts and crafts.
In their presentation, Peter and Christine dispel popular folklore and teach guests about the beneficial role bats play in nature managing insect pests, pollinating plants and dispersing seeds. They will showcase different bat species and introduce guests to a few of their captive tropical fruit bats.
WSU Vancouver is located at 14204 N.E. Salmon Creek Avenue off the 134th Street exit form either I-5 or I-205. Parking is free on weekends.

Call for Your Artist Hat
We are looking for volunteers to help lead the class art project for the upcoming Gambol, 2012. We need to fill 1st, 3rd and 5th grade leaders. The person in charge of the project will work with the students and on their own to help develop a collaborative piece of art to be auctioned off to one lucky family at this year’s Gambol Extravaganza. The Gambol helps raise money for teacher development and financial aid, and is an incredible contribution to our fund raising efforts. Please contact Tina Koehler, parent of Madalyne Koehler and Student Art Project Chair at tina@vrnational.com if you have any questions or are interested or know someone who may be interested. You can also gather a group of two or three parents to help coordinate your class' art piece. We will be holding our first meeting the second week of November.

ADHD Awareness Week- October 16-22
We Are Not Alone
October 16-22nd is ADHD Awareness week! Although medical and mental health professional know lots about the disorder many families dealing with ADHD feel that they are alone. With proper education and networking with others this no longer has to be the case.
About ADHD
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics “attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder limits children’s ability to filter out irrelevant input, focus, organize, prioritize, delay gratification, think before they act, or perform other so-called executive functions that most of us perform automatically.” It speaks to reason that many children exhibit this form of distractibility. However, ADHD causes distress and impairs the child’s ability to function and learn academically. The symptoms of ADHD are excessive, pervasive, and persistent. Although many of us are distracted from time to time living with ADHD can be quite overwhelming. Read full article
