Catlin Gabel racquetball teams win national championships

Catlin Gabel High School Girls Racquetball Team won the National Championship at the 18th USA Racquetball High School National Championships held in St. Louis, Mo. And the combined boys and girls team finished 1st in the nation in the overall team championship competition. There were 426 players and 55 schools from 26 states represented in the tournament.

Catlin Gabel’s Katie Ferguson finished 1st, winning the Girls #1 Singles event to become the High School National Champion. With this victory, Katie earns an appointment to the Junior National Racquetball Team and will train this summer with the Team at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. She will then represent the United States at the Junior World Championships in December in Mexico.

Three other Catlin players earned National Championships. Elizabeth Ferguson and Kamran Masood won in the #2 Mixed Doubles event. They were the defending National Champions in this event so have now won National Championships two years in a row. And, freshman Laura Davis won the National Championship in the #3 Girls Singles event. On her way to earning her Championship, Laura upset first the #1 seeded player and then in the finals she beat the Oregon state champion, a senior from Sprague High School.

Catlin players earned medals in 23 of the 31 events they entered. The Catlin team consists of seniors Adam Taitano, Blake Mason, Davis Schwartz, Elizabeth and Katie Ferguson, juniors Ben Kaplin, Cruz Rivera and Kamran Masood, and freshmen Gwen Survant-Kaplin, Emma Northcott and Laura Davis.
