Catlin Gabel High School Racquetball Team Wins National Championship

The Catlin Gabel Racquetball Team earned first place in the High School National Racquetball Championships the weekend of March 6 at the Multnomah Athletic Club. Competing against 51 high schools from across the country, the Catlin Gabel Team was the overall Team Champion, narrowly outscoring Southridge High from Beaverton. The eight Catlin Gabel girls also combined to finish second in the nation in the Girls Team Championships.

The Catlin Mixed Doubles team of Elizabeth Ferguson and Kamran Masood finished first in their division. Twin sisters Katie Ferguson and Elizabeth Ferguson finished second in Girls Doubles. Katie Ferguson and David Schwartz finished second in Mixed Doubles. Finishing third in their divisions were Annie Tzoneva in Singles, Annie Tzoneva and Danielle Witt in Doubles, and Zhenya Ephremova and Julia Rutenburg in Doubles.

Catlin Gabel players also earned five All-America honors: Katie Ferguson and Elizabeth Ferguson in both Singles and Doubles, and David Schwartz in Doubles.

Says Catlin Gabel coach John Ferguson, This National Championship is all the more remarkable since our team was formed just 3 years ago and competes against much larger schools. Every player contributed important points to the overall Team National Championship.

Catlin Gabelís team includes senior Zhenya Ephremova, juniors Katie Ferguson, Elizabeth Ferguson, Julia Rutenburg, Adam Taitano, David Schwartz, Blake Mason, and Team Manager Sarah Howard, sophomores Annie Tzoneva, Cruz Rivera, and Kamran Masood, and freshmen Lilian Onglelungel, Danielle Witt, and Rachel Babener.
