Catlin Gabel to Host Third Annual Tri-County High School Diversity Conference

PORTLAND, Ore., March 28, 2005 — Catlin Gabel School will host its third annual Tri-County High School Diversity Conference, "Tools for Social Justice," on April 22 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. About four hundred students representing most Portland area high schools will spend the day learning skills for cross-cultural communication. Workshops will be led by Nancy Luna Jimenez, an expert trainer on the subject.

Goals of the participating students, teachers, and school staff members include:

* Creating social change on high school campuses

* Learning how to intervene in negative situations, including offensive jokes, comments, and slurs

* Listening and building relationships across differences

* Taking action as allies

* Committing to becoming culturally competent.

Nancy Luna Jimenez, as principal of Luna Jimenez Seminars, has been training organizations and individuals in cross-cultural communications nationally since 1994. A graduate of Yale University and Ph.D. candidate at the University of California-Santa Cruz, Luna Jimenez has been writing about, receiving training in, and leading others in working towards ending oppression for more than 20 years.
