Catlin Gabel Appoints Vicki Swartz Roscoe to Head of Lower School

Instructional coordinator in West Linn-Wilsonville takes new job

Portland, Ore. – April 19, 2002 – Further reaffirming its commitment to academic excellence and inspired learning, Catlin Gabel, an independent, coeducational day school today announced the appointment of Vicki Swartz Roscoe to Lower School Head. Roscoe’s 23 years of experience in elementary-level classroom teaching and university-level staff development, combined with her background in child development and constructivist learning made her the candidate of choice for Lower School Head.

Roscoe will join Catlin Gabel on July 1, 2002 after she concludes her tenure as Instructional Coordinator for Boones Ferry Primary, West Linn/Wilsonville School District. A member on the Board of Trustees at the Portland Children’s Museum, Roscoe believes it is essential to strengthen relationships between children, parents and faculty. A strong advocate of student-led conferences and individual goal setting, Roscoe is a champion of horizontal continuum curriculum development.

“When Vicki Swartz Roscoe applied, we were struck by her qualifications, expertise, energy and enthusiasm for identifying opportunities for outreach to the larger community while developing Catlin Gabel’s mission as a laboratory school,” said Lark Palma, Head of Catlin Gabel School. “She is a strong believer in Catlin Gabel and we look forward to working with her to achieve our diversity, multiculturalism and inclusion goals.”

Before joining Boones Ferry Primary, Roscoe served as an instructor for Lewis & Clark College. She has also held positions including Curriculum Resource Teacher for Southwood Elementary in Orlando, Florida, Curriculum Coordinator for Boise-Eliot Elementary in Portland, Oregon and Graduate Lecturer for Portland State University.

One of five teachers inducted into the National Teacher Hall of Fame in 1999, Roscoe has been honored and recognized for her continued support of excellence in teaching, receiving honors including the Fulbright Scholarship to China in 1986, the Fulbright Exchange Teaching Fellowship in England (1983-1984) and Teacher of the Year (1999, elected by colleagues at Southwood Elementary). Roscoe earned a M.S. at Bank Street College of Education and holds a B.A. in Early Childhood Education and Special Education.
