Are you ready to take the city by bike, bus, and streetcar? Learn how to design a neighborhood or a rainwater drainage system? Get your hands muddy in the morning and shake hands with the city’s leaders in the afternoon?
PLACE stands for Planning and Leadership Across City Environments. Our unique program, run by Catlin Gabel School in partnership with the greater Portland community, focuses on how we relate to our urban environment through smart planning and effective leadership. PLACE is for high school students and recent high school graduates from around the region. During this dynamic, interdisciplinary, and experiential program, you will learn from the city’s best minds as they grapple with decisions that shape Portland’s future.
During PLACE you and a talented group of students will meet with sustainability experts, urban designers, and city leaders and work on planning projects. Here’s something we did last year after learning how Portland works, from the people doing the work: we teamed with community members and Portland State University professors to plan a new local high school that would serve as the center of a walkable community. Our work was presented to the public as well as city leaders and has since inspired local high school classes while shedding light on new ways to connect schools with their neighbors.
Program
PLACE gives you the opportunity to learn about how government, nonprofits, and the public operate to shape our communities while building writing, research, and leadership skills.
You will use Portland as a living laboratory to learn how you can be a leader for positive change in your community and beyond. This will help you stand out in a job interview or on a college application while giving the skills and confidence to be an engaged citizen.
The curriculum combines an experiential introduction to urban studies with the application of leadership techniques to projects that benefits the Portland region. This combination gives you hands-on experiences while creating a fun environment to learn: civics • sustainability • leadership tools • economics • statistics • writing • sociology • urban planning and design concepts • qualitative research and analysis • environmental studies.
