Do you feel like your middle schooler doesn’t want you around? Are you unsure about where you can volunteer or participate? We welcome parents to volunteer in Middle School programs. We appreciate our volunteers, and the students appreciate working with adults who share ideas and experiences. From time to time we invite parents to serve on special advisory committees, and, of course, the PFA asks for help with a variety of events throughout the year.
Here are some examples of volunteer opportunities in the Middle School. If you have questions or other ideas, please email Chris Bell, Middle School administrative assistant.
Community Service Suggestions and Contacts
Service learning is a valued component of the middle school curriculm. Parents often have contacts or suggestions for community service activities. Email Len Carr, Middle School assistant head, if you have ideas for community service activities.
Middle School grade representatives organize and coordinate volunteers for different grade-related activities (assisting with social and academic activities, providing food for class trips or conferences, etc.). Call your PFA grade representative listed in the directory if you are interested.
Eighth Grade Musical
Extensive parent support is needed for making costumes, building sets, and preparing food for tech rehearsals. Call the 8th grade PFA representative listed in your directory.
Eighth Grade Graduation
Seventh grade parents plan and execute the graduation reception for the eighth grade class as they prepare to move on to Upper School. If you are interested in assisting with this celebration, please email Barbara Ostos, Middle School head.
Help Design and Run a Breakaway Course
Breakaway is a four-day experiential education opportunity in March where small groups of mixed-aged students participate in a wide variety of experiential learning. We need volunteer assistance in organizing and supervising students both on and off campus. On occasion there may be opportunities to co-lead a Breakaway course with Middle School teachers. If you are interested in assisting with Breakaway or have ideas for a Breakaway experience, email Barbara Ostos, Middle School head.
Middle School Athletics
Sports team coaches need parent representatives to coordinate assistance at athletic practices and events (including event set-up, clean-up, and snack organizating). Email your student's team coach or Len Carr, Middle School assistant head, if you are interested in serving as parent representative. If your student's team has a parent representative, please contact him or her directly for volunteer opportunities.
Middle School Regional Track Meet
Students from around the region participate in Catlin Gabel’s annual Middle School track meet. We need volunteers to assist at track and field events, work in the concession stand, greet visitors, and host overnight guests in their homes. Information and sign-up opportunities will be posted in spring editions of the Peek at the Week newsletter. For additional information, please email Len Carr, Middle School assistant head.
Occasionally we invite parents to share their world travel, community service, or work experiences. If you have unique experiences that you think would interest middle school youth, we would be interested in knowing about it. Of course, our needs for speakers depend on curriculum, current events, and interests of the students. Thank you for understanding that we have different needs over time. If you have an experience you'd be interested in sharing with middle school youth, please email Barbara Ostos, Middle School head.
