Parking and Traffic
Safety
Basic safety and courtesy
Pedestrians have the right of way. Campus speed limit is 5 miles per hour–slow enough to brake if a child runs out, slow enough to prevent accidents. Please teach children, by direction and example, to use marked crosswalks and avoid the hazard of walking between parked or waiting cars.
Traffic patterns
Which way do I go?
Most vehicles should take the right fork as they enter campus. The left fork leads to the gym and is reserved for delivery vehicles, buses, and cars picking up athletes in the evening after practice or games.
One-way traffic
Follow campus signage indicating one-way and two-way traffic patterns. From 2:30 to 3:45 p.m., the one-way segment of the loop extends from the last parking bay to the end of the pick-up area. At all other times, the one-way segment begins at the theater lot. (See the parking and traffic map posted below.)
Parking
Upper parking lots
The first two upper lots as you enter campus are reserved. The upper paved lot is for employees only until 2 p.m. The upper gravel lot is for student carpools.
Main lot
The first two bays of the main lot are reserved for carpools. Please do not use these spots for drop-off or pick-up.
Theater gravel lot
The gravel lot behind the Cabell Center Theater is for student parking and overflow parking for parents and employees.
St. Vincent Hospital
Employees are permitted to park in the St. Vincent employee parking lot on the 7th and 8th floors only.
Drop-Off and Pick-Up
Where can I pick up and drop off my child(ren)?
Use only the drop-off and pick-up lane in the main parking lot. The pick-up pattern is designed for maximum safety.
Which lane should I use?
The inside, curb lane is for waiting, drop-off, and pick-up. The outside lane is for moving traffic only. Do not pick up children in the outside lane. To further ensure everyone’s safety and to keep traffic moving, please ask children to enter vehicles on the passenger side.
Express Zone
The express zone is a no-waiting pick-up area. It begins at the Toad Hall crosswalk. Look for signs. Only drivers whose passengers are waiting may use the express zone. You can enter the express zone from the left lane. An adult assists with loading to keep things moving quickly.
Use the phone
Children often call their parent’s cell phone when they are ready to be picked up at the express zone. Students are welcome to use the outdoor landline telephone outside Toad Hall.
Advice
The peak pick-up traffic abates by 3:25 p.m. We encourage drivers to delay picking up their students if they can.
