Soccer - Varsity Girls vs. St. Mary's School

Event Type: Regular

Date: August 26, 2017

Event Recap:
St. Mary's: Less than 24 hours after their first match of the season, the Eagles retook the soccer pitch at Catlin Gabel to take on St. Mary’s of Medford, OR. In another very competitive game, the Eagles worked to come out strong with the goal of scoring first and playing smart and quick to each other’s feet. After eight minutes of play, our first goal came to fruition with a ball across the box and on the ground from sophomore Caroline Cook to sophomore Annika Holliday who gracefully placed the ball into the back of the net after taking a few touches to set herself up around a defender. Back and forth, physical play ensued. It was a battle who moved the ball quickest all over the field. At 25 minutes of play, sophomore Caroline Cook received a ball from sophomore Ann Louise Naito and brought the score up to 2-0. While St. Mary’s fought hard and created a few excellent opportunities for themselves to score, our defensive line and goalkeeper kept them silent in the first half. However, ten minutes into the second half St. Mary’s capitalized on our tiring defense and scored two goals in four minutes to quickly bring the score to 2-2. As we were battling injuries and fatigue, our bench quickly got into the game and stepped up to bring us home. Freshmen Thea Traw, Zoe Waechter, Riley Hart, Sydney Straw, and Sophia Spry were all fantastic, coming up to play key roles all over the field for the Eagles very early on in their high school careers. With only five minutes left in the game, Ann Louise Naito put the ball in the back of the net from an assist from Caroline Cook. The game ended at 3-2 with a very close win for the Eagles. Caroline Cook ended the game with two assists and one goal in a truly spectacular performance. We play again on 8/30 on the road against Dayton and look forward to another opportunity to play some competitive soccer!
