Blythe Butler, Co-Director of College Counseling

Prior to coming to Catlin Gabel in 2010, Blythe was the director of college counseling at St. Mary’s Academy in Portland.  She also worked for 10 years in the Lewis & Clark College admissions office as the associate dean of admissions, where she read thousands of applications, coordinated the college’s electronic recruitment efforts, and visited high schools from Idaho to Connecticut. She has served on the executive board of the Pacific Northwest Association of College Admissions Counseling, the steering committee of the Pacific Northwest Colleges Consortium, and the professional development committee of the National Association of College Admissions Counseling. Blythe received her bachelor’s degree from Willamette University and earned her MA in nonfiction writing from Portland State University.


Bill Ouellette, Co-Director of College Counseling

Bill moved to Portland and started working at Catlin Gabel in the winter of 2016 after serving for 11 years as a class dean, 8 years as a college counselor, and 2 years as an English teacher at Punahou School in Honolulu, HI. Bill began his career in secondary education teaching English and Theatre at Thornton Academy, a comprehensive high school in southern Maine. Throughout his career, Bill has actively worked in school change initiatives and advocated for learning different students. He has an undergraduate degree in English from Bowdoin College and Master of Arts in Teaching English from The University of Chicago. Bill is currently pursuing a second masters degree in English Literature from the Breadloaf School of English at Middlebury College.

Robyn Washburn, Registrar

Robyn held positions from 1999 to 2010 as Middle School administrative assistant and as Upper School registrar. She worked as registrar for the Oregon College of Art and Craft before returning to Catlin Gabel in 2012. Robyn supports the college counseling office by offering tech support and record maintenance for Naviance, preparing and sending school materials for colleges, and tracking deadlines. Robyn holds a BA in English literature from the University of Montana.


Mira Om, College Counseling Administrative Assistant

Mira started at Catlin Gabel in 2008 as secretary in the Head’s office and now divides her time supporting the director of advancement and the college counseling office. She provides administrative and clerical support to the department, in serving the needs of the Upper School students and their families.  Prior to Catlin Gabel, she was employer relations assistant for the University of Oregon Career Center in Portland. Mira has a BBA degree in Marketing from the University of Georgia.


Amanda Lighthiser, English Department Chair

Amanda has taught writing to college undergraduates, graduate students, and high-school students of all ages for over thirteen years, and has particular experience working with students as they craft college application essays.  She also worked as a Senior Academic Advisor and Director of Writing Across the Curriculum at Tulane University’s School of Continuing Studies.  Before she discovered her love for teaching, Amanda was a practicing attorney in Tallahassee, Florida. Amanda holds a B.A. in Women’s Studies from the University of Georgia, a J.D. from Northeastern University, and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Oregon.
