Service Learning

Catlin Gabel supports inspired learning leading to responsible action. We build in service learning opportunities to teach empathy, leadership, citizenship, and personal responsibility. This work is integrated into the curriculum whenever possible. In addition to teacher-organized service learning, we support student-led initiatives such as 2nd graders organizing a fundraising campaign for disaster relief efforts.

Each grade is involved in a service learning project over the course of the school year. Projects include volunteering in a retirement home, organizing food drives, gleaning orchards to collect fruit for the Oregon Food Bank, and cleaning parks. Students also participate in service learning through Campus Day.

We also offer the summer Catalyst Project to foster environmental leadership skills in 4th and 5th graders who are committed to becoming agents of change in their communities. This summer program is a launching point for a much longer journey that continues with project work during the following school year and develops enduring habits of mind.
