Dear Fellow Alumni,

As you know, Catlin Gabel is a small, beautiful gem of a school. It is a community that creates, nurtures, and maintains unique relationships with our students. For me, this is one of the most meaningful and lasting aspects. When reflecting on my Catlin Gabel experience, I’m reminded of the countless relationships which I cherish to this day.

When I think about all my incredible teachers, mentors, and colleagues, one in particular stands head and shoulders above the rest – Head of School, Manvel Schauffler. Schauff was all about relationships, and he had a gift for making everyone feel special – and a knack for making you feel more special than anyone else. As a student, he inspired me and guided me, helping to shape my life and career.

Schauff believed in me and empowered me as a student to take on leadership roles. When I was a junior, he encouraged me to become a student representative on the Governor’s Commission on Youth. At his urging, I later became a class president and a student representative to the English department, and joined the Assembly Committee and the Social Committee. To this day, I carry Schauff’s spirit and his confidence as an educator and school leader, and for that I am forever grateful.

It was also Schauff who inspired me to become a teacher and make Catlin Gabel the centerpiece of my professional career for the last 28 years. I can say with confidence that teachers at Catlin Gabel continue to foster personal connections with every student. They take time to visit, know each student, and challenge them to be their best selves.

That’s what Catlin Gabel teachers offered us as students and why I am writing to encourage you to join me in making a gift and writing a note about the teacher who had a special impact on your life. Your contribution is a way to show that you value this personal and powerful approach to education, and the remarkable educators who make this school a positive experience and inspire young minds every day. Who will you honor today?

Sincerely,
