Dates:
Sat, 06/09/2012 - Sun, 06/10/2012

All 8th graders are invited to come and take part in this Outdoor Program tradition.  We will attempt to climb to the summit of this Northwest landmark, and will hopefully have a chance to peer down into the impressive crater.  On June 9th, our enthusiastic group will drive up to the climber's bivouac where we will set up our camp with many of the other climbers who will be poised to hike the mountain the following day.  With a bright and early start, we will make our way through the forest until reaching timberline where we will then gain the prominent Monitor Ridge.  The ridge should still have plenty of snow on it, which will make our walking a lot easier.  We will continue up the mountain, reaching as high as we are able.  After some glissading on the descent, we will get back on the bus and head back to Portland for some well-deserved rest.

There is no experience necessary, and you do not need to be an athlete to complete this climb. You do need to be in good physical condition and willing to work hard in a group setting.  All participating 8th graders must attend one of the three conditioning hikes offered through the Outdoor Program in the month leading up to the climb.

The cost of this trip is $125.  This fee covers permits, transportation, instruction, and most food.  This trip is only open to graduating 8th graders.  You can sign up by sending an email to David Zonana at zonanad@Catlin.edu

Oregon's Middle Sister is the fifth highest peak in the state at 10,051'.  Our attempt to reach its lofty summit will be a noble adventure, featuring a spectacular camping location and a small amount of travel on a live glacier.  The trip will commence on Sunday June 10th with a drive to the faux Western town of Sisters and a four hour hike to a high camp.  After a fine meal of grass-fed Oregon beef and certified organic vegetarian options we will bed down under the stars.  Monday will be climb day.  An early start will get us onto the glacier and to the summit before noon, if conditions are favorable.  We will spend another evening at our gorgeous camp, swapping stories and playing cards.  On Tuesday we'll make the hike out to the bus and drive back to Catlin Gabel, arriving about dinner time.

The trip is open to students 14 and over.  Students should be in good physical condition and comfortable camping in the outdoors.  Students do not need prior mountaineering experience.

Dates:
Mon, 06/18/2012 - Sat, 06/23/2012

Rock climbing in sunny Idaho!  Frequently gracing the pages of domestic and international climbing magazines, Idaho’s City of Rocks is a world-class destination for rock climbers.  We’ll have four days of climbing on the rocks and five nights of camping among the incredible building-sized granite formations.  With 3000+ climbs to choose from, it is a perfect location for beginning climbers as well as aspiring leaders.

We will focus on climbs mostly in the 5.7-5.11 range, climbing primarily on traditional gear-protected routes, but there are many bolted routes (5.8 and up). We will set up top ropes on many climbs, and do a few multi-pitch routes as well, depending on skill levels. Students who have passed the leading on rock course and wish to practice leading will find this a good location. The rock is superb quality. Each day we will climb from the morning until dark (or after) and walk back to the vehicles for the short drive back to the campsite. We'll return to Portland on Saturday evening.

Both adults and trained students will belay those who are climbing. Although no previous climbing experience is necessary, participants will need to be responsible for their behavior, alert at all times and follow all the rules established by the group and the leader.

The cost of this six-day trip is $375.  The trip is open to graduating 8th graders and all Upper School Students.  You can sign up by sending an email to Peter Green at Greenp@catlin.edu

WIth its headwaters high on the flanks of Mt. Students do not need rafting experience, but should be willing to learn, work as a team and paddle hard.  This trip is open to all Upper School students and graduating 8th grade students.

The estimated cost of this trip is is $135. This fee covers rafting instruction and gear rental, permits, transportation, and most food. All interested students should email David Zonana (zonanad@catlin.edu) to sign up.

Dates:
Thu, 07/05/2012

Portland is vying for the crown of "Bicycle City USA" and its crown jewel is the Springwater Corridor.  On this trip we will meet at Catlin Gabel in the morning and drive in our little school bus over to the Sellwood area.  Once there our group will mount our trusty bicycles (road bikes or mountain bikes ae fine) and start off on this magnificent trail.  The best part is that the route is almost flat!  We will travel through neighborhoods on this newly paved bike path, past industrial installations, through farmlands and frolicking horses and all the way out to Boring.  The entire bike trek will take about five hours and will cover perhaps twenty miles.  The strength of the group and the weather conditions will determine exactly how far we go, so students need not worry about it being excessively challenging.

The trip is open to Middle Schoolers.  Students should be in good physical condition and certainly must be comfortable riding a bicycle for most of the day. Students should plan to bring their own bicycles.

The cost of the trip is $10 and does not include lunch.

Opal Creek Canyoneering

Dates:
Sat, 07/07/2012 - Sun, 07/08/2012

The plan is to head south to explore the old-growth drainages of the Willamette National Forest and Opal Creek Wilderness on foot! We will arrive at the Shady Grove Campground (see included map), and will explore the area around there, either hiking west along the North Little Santiam Trail, or if the weather is good, and we are feeling adventurous, exploring the canyon of Gold Creek. The last mile of Gold Creek before its confluence with the Little Santiam River would be a nice warm-up for our objective on Sunday. On Sunday, we will hop in the bus and head as far as we can on FS Road 2209 before reaching a gate and parking area. We will continue on foot another couple of miles up the gravel road before dropping down into Opal Creek itself where we will travel in and along the stream itself for 7+ miles until we arrive back at our campsite. The hikes will not be on a trail. There will be times where we have to climb down short cliffs, or wade across the streams. These are beautiful, true wilderness creeks, and we may wade in the narrows of the creeks on occasion. It is bound to be a blast!

Members of the group should have wilderness skills and be comfortable scrambling and moving through varied terrain. Students do not need to be expert climbers, but should be good team players, and be willing to work hard.

This trip is open to all Upper School students.  The estimated cost of this trip is $50.  Interested students should email David Zonana (zonanad@catlin.edu) to sign up.

This will be an adventure!  Our group of ten students and two leaders will hike the spectacular gorges, canyons and ridges of Steens Mountain for five days.  This is an unbelievable opportunity for students to experience wilderness at a deeper level, learn group living skills, and see one of the great landscapes of the West.  On the first day we'll drive to the legitimately romantic town of Frenchglen and then to the trailhead.  Our hike will be short on this initial day as we head up one of the gloriously lush gorges on the south end of the massif.  The next three days will see us scrambling and backpacking up toward the summit of this 9100 foot escarpment.   We will see snowfields, mountain goats, petroglyphs, ancient homesteads and fabulous desert scenery.

The trip is open to Upper School students age 15 and over.  Students should be in good physical condution and be comfortable backpacking and camping in the outdoors.

The cost of the five day trip is $150.

Dates:
Mon, 07/16/2012 - Fri, 07/20/2012

Explore Oregon's only true wilderness coast on this five day backpacking and surfing trip.  Between the small, coastal towns of Bandon and Port Orford, Highway 101 pulls away from the Pacific shore, leaving a 29-mile section of untrammelled beaches, remote lighthouses, and rugged headlands.  Our group will backpack this section of the coast, crossing the Sixes and Elk rivers.  We will wade in the Pacific, explore the natural wonders of the area, and camp in breezy, secluded campsites along the way.  Beach bonfires will be a nightly ritual, as well!  After completing our one-way exploration of the coast, we will spend a day learning to surf in the ocean or windsurf at the nearby Floras Lake.

This trip is open to all Upper School students and incoming 9th grade students.  No surfing or backpacking experience is required, but students should be comfortable outdoors and the hiking along the beach will be demanding.  The estimated cost for this trip is $225.

Dates:
Tue, 07/17/2012 - Thu, 07/19/2012

We have designed the ideal summer bicycle trip.  We'll bike on paved roads through the old growth forests south of Mount Hood.  On each of the two evenings we'll camp in campgrounds and cook some fine meals.  We've designed this trip so that our route will be mosty downhill.  The bus will drop us off on the first day at a high point -- then we'll bike and cruise across the landscape- mostly downhill.  The group will carry its own food, tents and gear with us - a self supported adventure through some of the most beautiful forests of the west.  We may stop and swim at a few of the dozens of lakes along our chosen route.  The plan is to bike 12-15 miles each day.

Students should be comfortable camping in the outdoors and in good physical condition.  Students should plan to bring their own bicycles.

The cost of the three day trip will be $95.

The trip is open to students 14 and older.

We will meet with several experts along the way, possibly including a climatologist, a glaciologist, representatives from the Warm Springs tribe, US Fish and Wildlife scientists, and forest service employees working on stream/salmon habitat restoration. We will camp along the way (students don’t need special experience, and we can loan equipment such as backpacks and tents if necessary).
