Dates:
Sat, 05/18/2013 - Sun, 05/19/2013

This could be the most beautiful trip ever-  We will canoe on Waldo Lake- known for having the clearest water in Oregon.  The plan is to drive south to Eugene, pick up some canoes at a rental shop and head for the Cascade Range.  High up in the mountains we will park our school bus at the shore of this huge crystal clear lake.  We'll pack all our gear into the canoes and then head off across the lake.  Once on the far side we will set up camp and do some exploring.  That evening we will sit around the campfire and eat a nice meal cooked by the group.  We will sleep under the stars or in tents.

The next day we will do some more exploring, maybe a little swimming, before heading back across the lake to where our bus will be patiently waiting for us.

The trip anticipates no canoeing experience, but students should be in reasonable physical condition and comfortable eating and sleeping in groups with their friends.

The cost of the two day trip is $60 and includes canoes, food, and transportation.

The trip is open to students in the Upper School

Dates:
Sun, 06/16/2013 - Mon, 06/17/2013

All 8th graders are invited to come and take part in this Outdoor Program tradition.  We will attempt to climb to the summit of this Northwest landmark, and will hopefully have a chance to peer down into the impressive crater.  On June 15th, our enthusiastic group will drive up to the climber's bivouac where we will set up our camp with many of the other climbers who will be poised to hike the mountain the following day.  With a bright and early start, we will make our way through the forest until reaching timberline where we will then gain the prominent Monitor Ridge.  The ridge should still have plenty of snow on it, which will make our walking a lot easier.  We will continue up the mountain, reaching as high as we are able.  After some glissading on the descent, we will get back on the bus and head back to Portland for some well-deserved rest.

There is no experience necessary, and you do not need to be an athlete to complete this climb. You do need to be in good physical condition and willing to work hard in a group setting.

The cost of this trip is $125.  This fee covers permits, transportation, instruction, and most food.  Financial Aid is available (download the form below and return it to Mary Yacob)

This trip is only open to graduating 8th graders.  You can sign up by sending an email to Renee Jenkinson jenkinsonr@catlin.edu

City of Rocks Climbing Trip

Dates:
Sun, 06/23/2013 - Fri, 06/28/2013

Rock climbing in sunny Idaho!  Frequently gracing the pages of domestic and international climbing magazines, Idaho’s City of Rocks is a world-class destination for rock climbers.  We’ll have four days of climbing on the rocks and five nights of camping among the incredible building-sized granite formations.  With 3000+ climbs to choose from, it is a perfect location for beginning climbers as well as aspiring leaders.

We will focus on climbs mostly in the 5.7-5.11 range, climbing primarily on traditional gear-protected routes, but there are many bolted routes (5.8 and up). We will set up top ropes on many climbs, and do a few multi-pitch routes as well, depending on skill levels. Students who have passed the leading on rock course and wish to practice leading will find this a good location. The rock is superb quality. Each day we will climb from the morning until dark (or after) and walk back to the vehicles for the short drive back to the campsite. We'll return to Portland on Saturday evening.

Both adults and trained students will belay those who are climbing. Although no previous climbing experience is necessary, participants will need to be responsible for their behavior, alert at all times and follow all the rules established by the group and the leader.

The cost of this six-day trip is $375.  The trip is open to graduating 8th graders and all Upper School Students.  You can sign up by sending an email to Peter Green at Greenp@catlin.edu
