Invitation to parents from Michael Heath
We invite you to join us for an important parent meeting on Monday, September 26 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm in the Cabell Center Theater, where we will be taking a look at the FCD survey results for our Upper School students from last spring. Unless we agree to partner with families to address this ongoing issue, it will remain a serious challenge for the school. This evening event will enhance that partnership and also offer families some information critical to understanding more fully the reality of the situation.
Supporting our children in making good decisions is often a difficult and complicated practice. Our work with FCD will assist us with this fundamental, ongoing effort as a school community partnering with all of you. I hope to see you there; in the meantime, if you have any questions, please do get in touch.
With kind regards,
Michael

Dant House Faculty Lounge
As a follow-up to the Monday-night FCD meeting, parents are also invited to meet and talk with Corey Manning, a representative of Freedom from Chemical Dependency. We hope to discuss the impact of family and cultural values on families' decisions around drug and alcohol use by teens in their homes, as well as ways to sponsor drug- and alcohol-free gatherings for students. Light refreshments will be provided.

Strategies for coping with bullying
All-school parent meeting
Wednesday, October 26
6:00 to 7:30 pm
Middle School Commons
The psychological science of bullying has taken many turns throughout the years, and social psychologists are learning more and more about what works to prevent bullying dynamics. This parent night is a school-wide discussion about these strategies and how Catlin Gabel uses them. We hope you’ll join us and add your voice and questions to our discussion!
Attendance procedure
Please contact Mary Yacob if your student will be late or absent
As we start this new school year, we would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone about reporting attendance. If your student will be late, absent, or must miss class for an appointment, contact the Upper School office as soon as possible.
Please email Mary Yacob in the Upper School office or call 503-297-1894, ext. 315. Voicemail messages are checked frequently.
Students who will have planned absences of one or more days must complete a Request to Miss Class form, available in the Upper School office.
Thank you for your help.
September billing alert
On your September student bill, you will see a $110 “laptop fee” charged. This fee is used to pay for anti-virus, spam-filter, and lab software that is required for each student laptop. It also helps to pay for laptops that can be loaned out to students when theirs are being repaired. Please contact Richard Kassissieh in the IT office with any questions.
