Generations working together in service to the community
Our second year of service opportunities kicks off Saturday, October 29 at the OREGON FOOD BANK, 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Parents, students, faculty/staff, alumni, grandparents, and friends are encouraged to get out there and work together.
Why? Because that's the Catlin Gabel spirit, it's fun, and it's one way we say we care.
Bus service to the Food Bank departs from the theatre lot at 12:30, or you can meet us at the Oregon Food Bank: 7900 NE 33rd Drive, Portland, OR 97211.
Girls' Generation: FIRST Robotics competition
Tomorrow, Saturday, October 29
Come enjoy an exciting robotics competition next weekend, right on campus! Once again, Catlin Gabel US robotics has organized and will host “Girls' Generation,” the largest girls-only FIRST Robotics competition in the nation. Only girls are allowed to drive the robots, and only girls and their mentors can work on the robots in the pits. Our “Flaming Chickens” robotics team co-president, Marina Dimitrov '13, spearheaded this effort. Come to Tennis Courts 1 & 2 to witness the action next Saturday, October 29, between 11 am and 4 pm.
Nepal trip applications due
This Monday, October 31
This will be an amazing trip! If you are interested in going, please just fill out the simple application and give the brief adult recommendation form to a teacher (or another adult who knows you well).
Sophomore parent potluck
Sponsored by the PFA
All parents and guardians of our lovely sophomores are welcome to attend the PFA-sponsored potluck Wednesday, November 2 at 6:00 pm in the Barn. PFA potlucks take place for each Upper School grade level and are a great way to meet your peers.
Michael Heath will share some remarks, but the evening’s conversation will happen through your questions, ideas, and insights about life with a tenth-grader. Questions? Please don’t hesitate to contact one of your sophomore PFA representatives: Renita Crowell, Kirstie Fournier, and Jill Petty.

Have an old Lower School Gambol art project you aren't displaying?
The Lower School was recently painted, and this has been a great opportunity to redecorate! If you have a Lower School Gambol art project you wouldn't mind parting with, please contact Vicki Roscoe, Head of the Lower School.
Ghanaian artist in residence: Eric Adjetey Anang
Slide lecture Monday, November 7, 7:30 pm, Gerlinger Auditorium
Eric Adjetey Anang, a Ga fantasy coffin sculptor from Ghana, will be an artist in residence at Catlin Gabel from November 7 to November 11. We have invited him here to demonstrate his amazing art of sculpting a coffin out of wood in whatever shape a family feels best represents their deceased elder. He will be sculpting a woodworker’s hand plane, approximately 7’ long, 3’ wide, and 4’ high, on the front deck of the Barn. Please come ask him questions, watch him work, and feel free to participate in the building of the hand plane.
Two years ago, Michael de Forest, the LS woodshop teacher, traveled to Ghana for a summer and studied with Eric in his carpentry shop in Teshie, near Accra. There is also a US trip planned for Ghana from July 29 to August 19, 2012, where students will be working in the Kane Kwei Carpentry Shop with Eric.
Please join us on Monday, November 7, to learn more about Eric's work, or view pictures of his work online.
Parent community meeting: Courage to be the change you want to see
Thursday, November 17
Do you have the courage to foster resilience in your kids, when the culture is telling you to rescue them and prop them up? Do you have the courage to be truly compassionate not only to others, but to yourself, too? Learn from speaker Kathy Masarie how to model authenticity, honesty, and self-care in order to empower your kids. Time and location will be announced soon.
