Harvest Festival Celebration!
Friday, October 23, 11:00-11:30 am
Harvest Festival is an opportunity to recognize the value in coming together as a community in a joyful way. There will be a bonfire and music, wonderful drums, tinkling chimes and children’s voices rising in poetry and song. Then we’ll roll the oat cake to find out what kind of winter we will have. If it lands on “X” we will have a long cold winter and if it lands on “O” we will have a short mild winter. We’ll follow that with cookies and lunch!
It is a celebration of autumn, the harvest and sharing the bounty with others. Again this year we will make a connection to the wider community by asking children to bring donations for the Oregon Food Bank. During the week of October 19 we will collect NON-PERISHABLE items--rice, beans, pasta, canned tomatoes and soups.
Thank you for your donations!
Photo Retake Day, October 20
Just a reminder that Tuesday, Oct. 20 is re-take day. Dynamic will set up in the same spot in the fir grove near Schauff’s Circle. They will be taking pictures from 10:30-2:00 pm.
Retake day is for our students who were:
• Absent on Picture Day
• Who would like a retake, because they didn’t like their original photos. This requires you to return the packet of photos on retake day. Students will not receive new ID cards with this option.
If you have any qustions please contact Julie at higginsj@catlin.edu.
News from Vicki
In our school community, everyone learns — the students, parents and teachers. Last Friday was our Professional Development Day and I thought you’d be interested in knowing how we used that gift of time. Here on campus teachers participated in technology workshops and the “All Kinds of Minds” class that met Friday and Saturday. There were conferences in the Portland area for foreign language teachers, librarians, PE/Health teachers and environmental educators. Catlin Gabel hosted the Orff Conference for music educators. One teacher took a workshop at the NW Film Institute. Our teachers are fabulous and love to continue to learn and grow; we need to keep them nourished! Thank-you for your support of our continued professional development — know that we take this day seriously.
Veteran’s Day Community Meeting
Our Veteran’s Day Community Meeting will be held Friday, Nov. 6 and we will be learning about the Vietnam Memorial located here in Portland. If you have an idea of a possible guest speaker who could be effective in presenting to elementary age children, please let Vicki know.

Viewfinder Movie Series
Last week’s premiere Viewfinder was a huge success. Over 125 people came out to see the four films and participated in post-screening discussions with our amazing faculty hosts. Thank-you for your support of this effort to continue to broaden the minds of our youngsters as they become responsible global citizens!
Host International Student for Cross Cultural Exchange
We are looking for a host family for eighth grader Hwan Im for the remainder of this school year. Hwan has studied in the U.S. for the past year-and-a-half. His parents live in Korea. Hwan is currently staying with his Portland guardian. However, Hwan would like to live with an American family so he can improve his English and experience American family life. It is not necessary for the host family to have an 8th grade student. Hwan will travel home to Korea for winter break and spring break. If you would enjoy hosting this lovely young person, please get in touch with Ron Sobel, sobelr@catlin.edu, 503-297-1894 x276.

Library Volunteers Save the Day!
Thank you to the stellar group of volunteers who helped us dog paddle to shore this month during the deluge of book returns. However, we can never have too many library volunteers! So if you can save part of a day in your week for one task or another, let us know.
Many thanks,
Lisa and Dan

Also After School this week: The fifth grade Girl Scouts will meet in the grade 5 classroom after school on Wednesday.
ASC All-Day Programs this year: Because the demand for these programs has increased, we will rely on parents to notify ASC if they need their children to participate in a program on a particular day when there are no classes for employment or personal reasons. The more advanced notice can be (at least one week ahead of the date, unless it is an emergency) the better chance there is that a spot will be available.
You can find the dates of ASC all-day programs listed on Page 8 of the CGS Directory and in the “What’s Coming Up” calendar in The Crier. An *asterisk indicates that pre-arranged child care is available.
If there are open spots available for any of the all-day programs, that fact will be mentioned in the ASC column in The Crier the week before. During parent-teacher conferences in November and March, ASC will continue to provide childcare for no additional fee, during the time of children’s conferences.
