Breakaway News
Yesterday, students met with their Breakaway groups during advisory. Itineraries, packing lists, and waivers were distributed. In some cases, these will need to be signed and returned to trip leaders.
The final Breakaway meeting will be the morning of Friday, March 12th. This is a week from tomorrow.
Breakaway begins Tuesday, March 16th, and students will have been told where to meet when they arrive at school.
Global Education in Action
Next Tuesday and Wednesday just under 40 students are departing for Martinique and Costa Rica. They will be staying in homestays, speaking French and Spanish, and engaging in many different learning activities.
Groups are scheduled to return the week of March 22nd.
The State of the Commons
Today during extended C & C we discussed the state of the Commons, as in the metaphorical Commons. This includes the Commons, as in the MS Commons, but additional spaces such as the paddock, locker rooms in the gym, and classrooms.
This has the students reconnecting to shared space and our responsibility to it. Part of our identity as a group includes our willingness to care for each other and the spaces we are in.
We focused on several things in this discussion:
1. Why is it important that we care for these spaces?
2. What are you noticing around campus?

MSSA Sponsors Project Second Wind
Middle School students and families fight hunger through PROJECT SECOND WIND.
PROJECT SECOND WIND is organized through the Oregon Food Bank, the hub of an efficient statewide network of food banks, food pantries, soup kitchens and dining halls serving hungry people in the local area. PROJECT SECOND WIND is a partnership of more than 30 years between public and private schools. Last year the project collected 12,530 pounds of food as well as money to help those in need. Food is of course needed year around to provide emergency food boxes for families and individuals in the community. Close to 40% of those eating meals from an emergency food box are children. Most needed foods are: canned meats, canned & boxed meals, peanut butter, pasta, rice & cereal, canned fruit and vegetable, cooking oil. The MSSA (Middle School Student Association) is sponsoring a grade-by-grade contest to see which grade collects the most food (8th grade won lst year!) We have three food collection barrels in the Middle School Commons. We hope that you will give generously and give often. The barrels are here now and will stay in the building through Friday, April 2.

Donate humanitarian supplies for Cuba trip
Did you know that a Cuban citizen receives one bar of soap per month, and that all the hygiene supplies we take for granted are rationed in Cuba? You can help our students prepare for their trip to Cuba by donating basic supplies, from toothpaste and soap to old baseball gloves. Drop off your donations in the Upper School office or library any time through March 12. When the students arrive in Cuba in March, they will distribute the supplies to clinics and individuals. For a complete list of requested items to donate, please visit the Cuba trip page on the Catlin Gabel website http://www.catlin.edu/global-education/global-trips/cuba-2010. On behalf of the students making this life-changing trip, thank you for your contributions.
Catlin Gabel Middle School Track
2010 SEASON
STARTS MARCH 29TH!!!
The track program for middle school can best be described as “developmental.” It is designed to allow students to try a variety of events to develop new skills, abilities and confidence. Track offers the rare opportunity to experience a team sport where each individual makes a difference as they compete to the best of their ability.
It is our goal that students will have fun, improve their fitness level and experience personal growth through their participation.
Practice Schedule
Monday – Tuesday – Thursday
3:20 - 4:30
Meet dates and locations will be available on the Catlin Gabel athletic website and will be posted both in the MS commons and gym building
Expectations:
Participants must be able to attend at least two out of the three practices per week in order to be part of the team. (Sickness and out of town will be excused)
Students are expected to show respect to coaches, parent volunteers and all other participants, exhibit good sportsmanship and behave responsibly as representatives of Catlin Gabel School. Safety is our first priority. We will expect students to respect the equipment and stay focused during practice. We share the track with the Upper School Track Team and need to be vigilant on the infield and track so as not to interfere with their workouts.
Teammates are expected to build up and encourage one another, offering support as they compete in various events. We will take attendance each practice and those with a strong attendance record will have first priority for events such as the relay teams.
Students should remember to wear comfortable, warm and rain resistant and layers clothing. They should also wear a decent pair of running shoes.
For track meets students must wear a team t-shirt with blue shorts or sweats. It is always a good idea to layer clothing and be prepared for cold and wet weather. They should bring a water bottle and have extra snacks. If a student is taking an alternate ride home they must have a note from a parent giving permission.
Students should inform their coaches of any injuries. They should also speak directly to a coach if other concerns or problems arise.

Garden Club Design Contest
The Garden Design contest was close. There were so many great ideas, including the following: student art sculpture; benches; raised beds; student-made stepping stones; another poetry box; a water feature or fountain; paths meandering and curving through the garden heading down hill; arbors over the entrances to the gardens over paths; filbert or cacao nut shells along with cedar chips to delineate paths; berries or fruit; flowers in pots and smaller beds; wild flower areas; retaining walls; greenhouse (10’ x 12’ or smaller); elevated areas for kids to climb (stumps, teeter totter, balance beam); bi-level beds; being able to see the pattern, especially a central area, from the gym; a gazebo in that central area; a potting bench; vertical bean & pea teepees; and an art pavilion. We can and will use many of these superb ideas.
The Garden Club judged 59 entries, paring these down to twelve. We then went through the twelve again and said what we liked about each, narrowing our focus, revisiting our things we liked and our priorities, expanding our horizons with the great ideas presented by the drawings, and then we halved the twelve to six, which we then ranked.
Daisy Steele’s design took first place, earning four first place votes of a possible seven. Congratulations, Daisy! Please see the attached PDF of Daisy’s design. Your Gift Certificate to The Farm Café will be in the mail today.
