Winterim catalog is coming soon!
Our annual keystone experiential education program – Winterim – will officially launch within the next 10 days, via the Winterim Catalog of this year’s offerings.
What is Winterim, exactly? For four days in March, Monday, March 19 through Thursday, March 22, the Upper School will suspend regular classes and offer a variety of experiential learning opportunities outside the regular curriculum. Winterim seeks to immerse students in intensive experiential learning to further their education, intellectually, interpersonally, and physically. Winterim strives to stretch students in new and profound ways, as it promotes different perspectives through participation and experience. Students have generated ideas and collaborated with faculty members since November to create 20+ Winterim offerings.
Once the catalog of these special activities is published, please review the offerings with your students, as they will sign up for their top eight choices during their regular C&C.
Contact Jessica Marlitt with any questions.

Catlin Gabel “Care Committee” is forming
The first meeting will be scheduled for February. School community members do a great job of helping each other through serious health problems and other difficulties, often providing meals, rides, etc. The purpose of the committee is to complement what is already happening by keeping school leaders and faculty informed of major issues affecting a family and finding ways for Catlin Gabel to provide additional support.
Please contact Kayla Reich, if you would like to play a part in defining the role of this developing committee.

What better way to ring in the holiday season than to watch menacing 120-pound student-built robots fling and shove defenseless stuffed bunnies? The FIRST Robotics game this year is a demented mash-up of capture-the-flag and Nerf-dart tag. It's fun for the whole family.
The rules and video from last year are online. Photos from last year's event are also online.

Senior project presentations: Thursday, June 2
All Catlin Gabel families are welcome to attend our special senior project assembly on Thursday, June 2, from 1:05 to 2:05 pm in the Cabell Center. The five projects featured in this assembly involve search and rescue, auto repair, historical re-enactment, organic farming, and education in the hospital setting. Parents of seniors are welcome to stay on for continuing presentations in classrooms from 2:10 to 3:15 pm. For more information, contact Mary Yacob at x315.
In accordance with Oregon law, every student entering grade 7, 9, or 11 must have a physical exam before beginning school in the fall. We recommend making appointments as soon as possible, since doctors' schedules become very full in the summer. Physical forms can be downloaded on the Upper School Web page.
In the fall, we will welcome sophomore Nimsi Campos-Solís from the Cloud Forest School in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Please contact Spencer White, global education coordinator, at whites@catlin.edu if you are interested in hosting our fifth Cloud Forest scholar.
As we approach the end of another great school year, the PFA respectfully reminds parents that giving personal gifts to teachers invites misinterpretation, favoritism, and inequity. To avoid these unhappy situations, the PFA encourages families who wish to express their appreciation to a teacher to do so with small, inexpensive tokens such as a note, a card, or a child’s drawing. For those who would like to do more, the PFA suggests that families consider giving to the school’s annual fund in honor of a particular teacher or teachers.

Parents and guardians of students from age 4 to 18 will find Michael's talk relevant. He mixes anecdotal and clinical experience with research on the outcomes of different parenting styles and comes up with a warm-hearted recipe for providing children with an internal foundation for moral behavior.

The Pressured Child: Helping Your Child Find Success in School and Life
Free lecture by Michael Thompson, Ph.D.
Tuesday, April 26, 7:00 – 9:00 pm
Cabell Center Theater
Sponsored by the PFA
The Pressured Child is, in fact, a presentation for "pressured parents" who have forgotten what school is actually like. It is a talk for parents who are gripped by worries and misapprehensions about their children's life in school.
Catlin Gabel has invited parents from six independent schools to come to our campus for this special event: Arbor, FAIS/Gilkey, OES, PJA, Childpeace Montessori, and St. Andrew Nativity.
