Hello Honeybee Families and Friends!
Circus Art Project
We enjoyed a busy week in the Honeybee classroom, full of buttons and glitter and imagination. As the circus approaches, we are beginning to brainstorm about costumes and decorations. For many years it has been a tradition for the children to make paper clowns out of a series of art projects, but this year we are opening up the possibilities and asking each Bee to create their own life size “performer.” It may be a clown, an acrobat, a horse trainer, or any other circus performer that inspires them.
The Honeybees began their plans with a series of costume designs, using photographs of circus performers for reference. We also examined body position and poses with the use of an overhead projector and shadows, taking photos of the different forms. This week we will begin to trace each child’s body onto large pieces of butcher paper in the pose of their choice and start to select the costume designs to dress their performers in. As this is an emerging and dynamic project, we have no idea what the results may be, which makes it all the more exciting! We’ll keep you posted as the work unfolds.
Books
To kick off the week, Rebecca read Circus Girl by Michael Garland. In detailed illustrations, the story describes a young girl’s life in the circus. Her father is a clown, her mother is a tightrope walker, her uncles are acrobats, and her grandfather is… well, you should Ask Your Honeybee to find out!
Button Project
The button projects are still in full swing at Allen’s table, and some Bees have started to add beads and embroidery to their work. Allen also read two button themed books for morning meeting this past week. The first book, The Magical Mystical Marvelous Coat by Catherine Ann Cullen, tells the story of a boy who has a coat with magic buttons. Each one has a different power, and he uses them to help someone in need. The second is a classic tale from Arnold Lobel’s Frog and Toad called “The Button.” When Toad loses one of the buttons on his coat, he asks Frog for help finding it. He comes across a number of buttons as he searches the forest, but to his utter frustration none of them are his own. Ask Your Honeybee: What magic powers did the buttons on the marvelous coat have? How did they help the different characters? And where did Toad finally find his button?
Have a wonderful week!
