Beginning School Art Show
February 22 - March 29
Please stop by the Cabell Center to see the wonderful art display created by the preschool and kindergarten students.
ASK YOUR HONEYBEE how a toilet works. You can have your Honeybee use the diagram below to help. Where does the clean water come from? What makes the big noise when the toilet is flushed? What happens inside the tank when the handle is pushed? Where does the dirty water go? (Many children this age are frightened of the toilet—the big, loud sound; the contents that seem to disappear; and worries about what happens when there is an overflow. These are very normal worries for four and five year olds and we hope that our Morning Meeting devoted to toilets and how they work will be helpful.)
We have been a very busy group of Honeybees. We have completed our wonderful project for the Gambol—we’ve been promised a sneak peek as soon as it comes back from the framers. We are very, very excited about this project… our Bees outdid themselves in care and effort!
The portrait study project is also finished. Be sure to look at the studies tacked up in the classroom. They also represent lots of concentrated effort on the part of each child. The idea was to learn to really LOOK at a face and SEE what is there. We think that they all did an admirable job of a challenging task. If you do not find your Bee’s portrait study in the classroom, you will find it over in the Cabell Center as part of the Beehive Art Show, which you shouldn’t miss!
Books
We did some fun reading this week. One Mitten Lewis by Helen Kay with cute illustrations by Kurt Werth, is a great story about a little boy who just cannot manage to keep a pair of mittens. ASK YOUR HONEYBEE about Lewis and the different ways his mommy tried to solve the problem of so many missing mittens. What happened to the new red mittens that his mommy knit for him? What happened to the leftover mittens? What happened when a new girl moved in across the street—how did she and Lewis make friends?
We are beginning to read a series of stories about cats (there are some great ones out there, including those of T.S. Elliot). Last week we shared two with the Honeybees. Galumph, by Brenda Lansdown, with illustrations by Ernest Crichlow is a neat story about a cat who is named by each of her presumed owners. ASK YOUR HONEYBEE to tell you about Tony (who named the cat Galumph), Mr. Romano (who named the cat Gattina), Maria (who named the cat Mimita), and Patricia (who named the cat Sunset). What did the cat do for each of the people she visited and what did they do for her? How did Tony, Mr. Romano, Maria, and Patricia all discover that all of their cats were the same cat? What was the exciting surprise at the end of the story?

The Fire Cat by Esther Averill was our second cat story. ASK YOUR HONEYBEE to tell you the name of the Fire Cat (Pickles) and how she got to be a Fire Cat. What did the woman do for Pickles? How did she help Pickles change from being a naughty cat to a more upstanding citizen? What important job did she do after she became a Fire Cat?
Does your Honeybee have an Ample Supply of Dry Clothes at School?
At this time of year, we continue to go outdoors everyday. The wetness with its interesting puddles, mud, moving water, wet sand, roof drips is of great interest to the children. HOWEVER, many of the children are running out of dry clothes. PLEASE, PLEASE check your Bee’s supply of clothing and make sure that there is plenty there—including socks, tights, leggings, pants. You get the gist….

Coming to you in an email—is your conference form for the upcoming conferences this week. We sent a hard copy home on Friday and here is another chance—please get it to us ASAP.
Have a great week. We are looking forward to conferences on Thursday and Friday.

Donate Humanitarian Supplies for Cuba Trip
Did you know that a Cuban citizen receives one bar of soap per month, and that all the hygiene supplies we take for granted are rationed in Cuba? You can help our students prepare for their trip to Cuba by donating basic supplies, from toothpaste and soap to old baseball gloves. Drop off your donations in the Upper School office or library any time through March 12. When the students arrive in Cuba in March, they will distribute the supplies to clinics and individuals. For a complete list of requested items to donate, please visit the Cuba trip page on the Catlin Gabel website
http://www.catlin.edu/global-education/global-trips/cuba-2010. On behalf of the students making this life-changing trip, thank you for your contributions.
