First Graders read to the Kindergarteners!
Dear Parents,
Happy May! Thank you for your participation at Sunday’s Spring Festival. The children loved the parade and were excited about selling their worm power. Today, Yasmin Ansari, Yusef’s mother, will share her family celebration of Eid with the children. Thank you, Yasmin!
Chick News
We are intent on our chicks hatching Wednesday, the official 21st day! The children have kept their timekeepers, and learned about the journey of the little life that is developing inside the shell. In the past we have learned to expect things to begin happening even on day 20, and to continue for the next 1-3 days. We keep a good thought for all the chicks to hatch, but we need to prepare the children for the possibility of an egg that may not hatch, or may partially hatch, or a chick that hatches but is not strong enough to survive. Hatching from the shell is an exhausting process. Ask your Eagle how a baby chick uses its beak to break out of the shell, and how long it takes!
Eagle Update
What a wonderful trip we all had to Sauvie Island last week. Scott Bowler led us on an eagle nest hunt throughout the island. We saw some wonderful enormous nests, eagles flying, and even an eagle in its nest. It was a wonderful-spontaneous opportunity! Thank you Scott! The children have been captivated by eagle family life – mating, building nests, and hatching eggs. This week is perfect timing for our visit to the Jackson Bottom Wetland Preserve on Wednesday morning. We will leave at approximately 10:00 a.m. and arrive back at school for a late lunch. Parents (not siblings) are welcome to join us. We will provide snack. Please pack a hearty lunch that day for when they return to school. The Eagles have learned about the following body parts of an eagle in detail: eyes, beak, toes, talons, feathers, wings. They have made headbands, talons, and wings that will help transform themselves into a bald or golden eagle on our Eagle Sharing Day,Thursday, May 27th.
This Week's Friday Sing
Friday Sing will be held in the Cabell Center. The kindergartners have been learning dances in music and will dance on the stage. Following the Sing, we ask that all of the mothers stay for a short Mother’s Day presentation. An enormous “thank you” to Dancy Jubb who was instrumental in helping the children make their mothers a stunning surprise.
Visitors and Exciting News
We are happy to report that we are narrowing our list of kindergarten teaching applicants. For the next two weeks we will have applicant visitors who will be interacting with the children. All of the finalists are very strong and we look forward to getting to know each of them better. We’ll keep you posted when decisions are made.
P.S. You may have noticed that your child drew a hen for their May calendar. Thank you to David Maslen, Arlo’s dad, for bringing his beautiful hen to school for the day!
Mark Your Calendars - June 4th Lifer Celebration!
9:00 a.m., Kindergarten Courtyard
On Friday, June 4th we will be congratulating those graduating seniors who started at Catlin Gabel in preschool, kindergarten, or first grade. We will bring them back for a few old and chrished songs, and they in turn will pass on some sage advice to our Beehivers. For the event, we have an idea that we hope you'll take part in: Let's all wear our Beehive Bee T-shirts in honor of the Lifers! The seniors will be presented with their own Beehive Bee shirts as a send-off present. This is a very special moment of connection between our oldest and youngest students, and one you may need a hanky for.
Happy May!
