Dear Parents,

We are so excited about our Valentine’s Day celebration coming up on Thursday! We have been getting ready for it by working hard in the post office and in the classroom addressing and mailing our valentines. By the end of Thursday everyone should feel well celebrated and connected to each other in a special way. The children are now well into addressing their valentines, making sure to write clearly, include the child’s important post office box number, and remember the stamp. They are doing great! They zip out to our mail box in the courtyard to mail the valentines. From there, during exploration time in the Piazza, children work in the Eagle Post Office. Five children at a time cancel stamps, sort mail according to the first numeral in the post office box number, and finally deliver the mail to each post office box. It is authentic work, and the children love it! It is important that each child have an opportunity or two to work in the post office. To that end, we will be saving our valentine cards to open during the week following our party, rather than following our valentine’s lunch.

Valentine’s Day Lunch

We will be making our own lunch on Thursday. Your child will only need to bring a snack to school and a piece of fruit of their choice. The fruit will be added to a delicious “friendship fruit salad” that will be part of our lunch menu. The children will also help by decorating a cupcake and making a heart-shaped sandwich for themselves. A special thank you to Stacey Hobart for helping to coordinate our lunch/party. Following lunch we are planning a surprise video of beloved Postman Pat. These special stories come to us from Britan, where Postman Pat and his black and white cat, Jess, travel through the villages in a red van delivering parcels and mail. They are truly sweet stories with beautiful animation.

Day 100 is Coming!

We will be celebrating the 100th day of school on Tuesday, February 23rd. We will be baking a special cake for Zero on that day and putting our 100 dot book together. You can read it with your child when they proudly bring it home. Today, we will be sending home a Ziploc bag and a “100” counting grid. Your homework is to help your child make a collection of 100 small items that will fit in the bag (coins, pasta, candies, nuts and bolts, buttons, etc.) Let your imagination soar! We ask that you send items that can be used to make a “100” piece sculpture at school, so please do not send in items that you need back. Please bring the items to school in the bag provided. It is important to have the children do the counting for their collection. They may count by ones or tens. Please send the collection to school by Friday, February 19. The upcoming long weekend will be a perfect time to complete this project. The Day 100 celebration is one of our favorite math activities of the year.

New "Open Snack" — Today was Great!

We are trying a new snack routine for the children. Each morning, Exploration time will include an open-snack table. The children may snack at any time between 9:15-10:15. This allows us a few more important minutes of exploration, blends children from both classes, and minimizes inappropriate behaviors that can occur with many children having snack at the same time. Please clearly mark a snack container in your child’s lunch so he/she can quickly identify it. The children will continue to use their water bottles as usual. We’ll let you know how this works out.

Have a wonderful-long weekend and love to you all on Valentine’s Day!

NurtureShock Book Discussion

It’s not too late to join us on Thursday morning after drop-off to discuss NurtureShock. We had a lively discussion of the first two chapters, “The Inverse Power of Praise” and “The Lost Hour” on the surprising effects of insufficient sleep.

At our next meeting we will discuss the next two chapters, “Why White Parents Don’t Talk about Race” and “Why Kids Lie”. It’s bound to be a meaty conversation. Please jump in!

Next meeting:  Thursday, February 11th, 8:40 a.m., BS Well
