This week seems to be nuts and bolts week. Thanks to all the kindergarten parents who have signed the permission to wade forms. If you don't come to the Beehive to drop off or pick up, e-mail Tammy and she will see that you receive a form.
Please check that your authorization to pick-up form is up to date. We've come across a couple of situations recently that prompt us to remind you to check this. Thank you!
Another update - please be sure your on-line contact information is correct. Tammy will be running a list next week and we want to be sure we have captured any changes.
Thanks for your attention to these details!

Teaching and Learning Center Lecture
INSIDE/OUT Lecture Series—Thursday, February 2
Please join Catlin Gabel classroom teachers, learning specialists and Dr. Ajit Jetmalani next Thursday, February 2nd at 7 pm in the MS Commons.
It’s becoming harder to live an attentional life. Busy, scheduled lives and technology have complicated our lives and made it more difficult to attend.
It’s problematic for the adults, for sure, but what about youngsters, both when they are in class, on fields, and at the dinner table?
This evening will consider the effects of ADD and ADHD on adolescents at home and school. What do attentional issues look like at home for parents, especially as they relate to family life and just as importantly, the intersection of home and school? What do ADD/ADHD look like in the classroom?
Dr. Jetmalani joined the OHSU faculty in 2007 as Director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Education after practicing in the Portland area since 1988. In August of 2009, he was given the Joseph Professorship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Education and in September of 2010 he assumed the position of interim Director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Gambol News:
Got Wine?
Do you have some bottles of wine you'd love to donate to the Gambol? Well, we'd love to have them! We are looking for donations for bottles of wine (still and sparkling) for our Wall of Wine at the Gambol. Here's the skinny:
1) Value of wine need to be $20 or greater per bottle.
2) Fill out a donation form (then you get the official charitable donation) located at the bottom of this web site http://www.catlin.edu/giving/gambol/donations.
3) Starting February 1, drop off wine and donation form at Toad Hall reception desk
Easy as that!
Are you looking for a cool way to contribute to the Gambol? We are looking for one-day job shadows for Upper School students to attend during summer break. Student leaders brainstormed ideas for placements that would provide real-world applications for the skills and knowledge they gain at school. Their suggestions include medical research, industrial engineering, publishing, computer technology, advertising, architecture, graphic design, fashion, film, and food service. The one day you offer this summer could open a world of possibilities for a student. Please let us know if your Upper School student has a specific request and we’ll see what we can do! For more information or to express interest in offering a one-day job shadow at your workplace, please email Cath Swanston at cathswanston@gmail.com. Thanks!

Catlin Gabel Care Committee
The Catlin Gabel “Care Committee” is forming, with the first meeting scheduled for February. School community members do a great job of helping each other through serious health problems and other difficulties, often providing meals, rides, etc. The purpose of the committee is to complement what is already happening by keeping school leaders and faculty informed of major issues affecting a family and finding ways for Catlin Gabel to provide additional support. Please contact Kayla Reich, at k.reich@comcast.net, if you would like to play a part in defining the role of this developing committee.

In the on-going quest for smoother pick-up at the end of the school day, we have run into a hitch in our efforts. As you know, we are balancing our licensing requirements with parent convenience and the lowering of parking issue irritation.
Unhappily we cannot meet our supervision ratios in the Village and continue to offer parents the option of walking children out to the express section of the pick-up line. You, or someone over eighteen whom you have designated on your release form, will need to come in to collect your child. We wish it were otherwise, but there we are.
On a happier note - this year, as you may be aware, is our self-study year in preparation for our reaccreditation visit from a team of experts from other schools in the Pacific Association of Independent Schools. These helpful folks will look at our mission and our self-assessment, combine it with their expertise, and give us feedback about what we are doing well and where we can improve our practice.
As part of our self-study, be watching for a survey coming to you soon. We appreciate your thoughtful feedback on your and your child's experience at Catlin Gabel. It will help inform our next steps as a school community, so please participate. We look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Personal decisions
The safety of students is our primary concern. Parents should make personal weather-related safety decisions for their families. If it does not seem safe where you are, keep your children at home. If conditions deteriorate in your neighborhood during the day, you may pick up your children early (making sure to notify the division administrative assistant).

Happy New Year! As a school person, it always feels a bit odd to have a new year in the middle of our school year, but in many ways it is a new start. Our students return in January as experienced students, ready and confident about how to "do" school. They have the routines down and can focus on building and expanding relationships. It was a treat to see the excited reunions on Tuesday morning! The Honeybees and Eagles also return ready to dig in and move forward with cognitive growth. We see more elaboration in their work, whether it be building with blocks, drawing, writing, telling stories, or imaginary play. Their movements are more coordinated and their muscles are stronger. They are still great noticers, but they have more theories and questions. It's a productive, lively time of year that we look forward to with delight.

Even though we are doing our best to keep things calm and reasonable in the Beehive, excitement is in the air. Right now Lower School students are pouring past my door, excited voices calling through the Fir Grove on their way to the theater to take their seats for the eighth grade production of "St. George and the Dragon." There are faculty and staff who were once themselves in the show and the campus buildings empty out as everyone wants to witness what this year's 8s will do with this nutty production. With a preview from the dragon and St. George in the Well, we feel well prepared to participate in the event. But it isn't exactly calm that we are creating here! 'Tis the season.
Have a wonderful weekend!

In the midst of the holiday season, I often find myself thinking about the most lasting gifts we can offer our children. In the hurry of preparations, travel, and family gatherings we often forget that undistracted time with our children, doing something simple together, will be the times they remember as defining their childhoods. During the bustle of preparations it can also be the most difficult gift to give. It is good to remember that an activity with your child doesn’t have to take a long time. Sometimes just that special snuggle-up and the one favorite story can be sufficient. Jonathan has written some good reminders as we head into the holiday season. Answering Tough Questions - Friday Dec. 9

If you have ever been faced with the tough questions of a preschooler or kindergartener then you know how baffling it can be to answer them honestly and without too much detail. Come to the next parenting group to talk about how to answer your child's tricky questions. Bring some good stories and your sense of humor as we unravel some strategies for these age-old questions.

Hannah's Headline
We had an excellent turnout for Open House last Sunday. It had a festive air about it with students, parents, alumni, faculty, and administrators on hand to show our school to interested people in the community. Deep appreciation to Scott Cooley, Sarah Stascausky, and Joani Wardwell for helping to host. We were busy bees in the Beehive and couldn't have done it without parent help.
After Friday Sing a few parents let us know that they had not received a copy of "The Beehive Songbook". If we missed you in the distribution last spring, please let Tammy know and she will give you a copy.
Thank you for the donations of baby things for Bienestar. Our Upper School Bienestar homework helpers will be happy to deliver these to families who will make good use of them.
Parent group today addressed personal resiliency builders. The handout is in the box in the well. Next time we will take a look at environmental resiliency builders. As you can tell from all the talk, it is an important topic. The Teaching and Learning Center on campus has made a link to some interesting on-line articles and an audio file of one of the recent CG talks. Here is the link:
As we head into Thanksgiving I reflect on how much we have to be grateful for, and for me much of it is right here at school. Thank you for sharing your children with us. Have a joyous celebration with people you love!
Beehive Grandparents and Special Friends Day
November 22, 10:00-11:30 am
We are getting ready with eager anticipation to welcoming your child's guest or guests on Tuesday.
The Beehive Grandparents & Special Friends Day will begin in the Cabell Center theater at 10:00 am. We will have refreshments for the early arrivals. The children will join us in the theater for a small version of Friday Sing and then we will head over to the classrooms for activities.
Picture your child's guests moving around campus and please let Tammy know if any guest needs help with mobility. She will arrange for rides in one of the gators, if needed.
Things to know:
• The Barn is unable to accommodate feeding grandparents and special friends. However grandparents and special friends who are staying on for the Lower School portion of the day will be served lunch in the Vollum Center and given a little breather before plunging in again in the afternoon. Vicki and I will shepherd the guests to and from their destinations.
• Your Beginning School child will be dismissed at 11:30 am. Make sure you sign up with Chenoa (ohlsonc@catlin.edu) if you would like to take advantage of extra Extended Day in the Village beginning at 11:30, so we will know how many staff to assign. There is no additional charge for this.
• After School Care will be available from 3:00 - 6:00 pm at the usual charge.
No Route Buses Monday or Tuesday, November 21 & 22
A reminder that morning and afternoon route buses will not run the week of Thanksgiving Break.
Green Bus Route Stop Change
Parents, a minor adjustment has been made for the Green bus route in both the morning and afternoon. The stop on SW Vista will move up to the stop sign at the intersection of SW Patton/SW Broadway (also known as the “Fountain” stop). The change will begin on Monday Nov. 28.
The schedules and the map on the school website have been corrected to reflect this change.
Congratulations Eagles!

Thank you to Father Fall for helping us welcome the season and lead the way into the quiet time of year, quiet at least in the natural world. This list of events would suggest otherwise.
The topic for parent group this morning was temperament. We talked about what temperament is, how it manifests itself over time, and the parenting moves that help "soften the edges", as Jonathan says, of temperaments that tend toward the ends of the spectrum of intensity. Handouts are in the parent group box in the Well, for those who are interested and weren't able to attend.

Ghanaian Fantasy Coffin Sculptor Eric Adjetey Anang
Eric Adjetey Anang is a design coffin maker (fantasy coffins) from Accra, Ghana.
ErIc joined the Catlin Gabel community this week. He crafted a coffin on the deck of the barn in the form of a 7'-long, 3'-wide carpenter's hand plane. He had lots of help from students in grades 1 through 5 as they had shop class on the barn deck. Click on the link below to take you to a beautiful flip-book of Eric's life and shop in Ghana.

Thank you for making time to come to school to meet with us about your children. We value the time to think together about each student, to celebrate their accomplishments and plan for next steps in their learning.
Thank you also to the families who brought delicious lunch makings - lucious casseroles, soups, salads and desserts. We felt well taken care of and well nourished! Clean dishes will be on the credenza in the Well on Monday. Please let us know if you are missing a dish or utensil.
Have a restful weekend, and remember the time change, which tends to throw all of us off for a couple of weeks. It's a good time to keep things simple.

Resiliency in Our Youth - November 10, 7:00 pm, MS Commons
The summer issue of The Atlantic included the cover story, “How the Cult of Self-Esteem is Ruining Our Kids.” It highlighted resilience in the face of disappointments and failures and emphasized the importance of setbacks in forming fully developed and psychologically resilient adults.
Lack of resilience is a major issue for young adults — so much so that college administrators have labeled some students “teacups” as a metaphor for those who easily break at the slightest stress.
Please join us next Thursday, November 10 at 7 pm in the MS Commons to hear from Nancy Donehower, Director of College Counseling and Psychologist Paul Myers, Director of Student Health at The University of Portland.

21 Days for Bienestar Project
Friday, November 4 – Friday, November 18
The 21 Days for Bienestar project builds on our successful Upper School homework club partnership (check out this article) and last year’s Service Corps book drive.
About Bienestar:
Bienestar provides homes for approximately 1200 adults and 900 children with more to come. Historically 99% of the residents of the properties have been Hispanic. For twenty-six years, 254 apartments were rented only to farmworkers. That continues as a requirement for five properties. An additional 200 units are for low-income families working in any occupation.
Bienestar also provides additional educational programs, such as Head Start.
This month we are asking the Catlin Gabel community to make donations to Bienestar. The BS collection site will be the Well. Most needed items are listed below.
• Clothing for infants and toddler under age 5 (Very gently used is OK).
• Used or new toys and books for babies and toddlers. Educational toys and board or cloth books preferred, but toys age-appropriate for under age 4 would be great (Very gently used is OK).
• Infant and toddler diapers.

Artist in Residence
Eric Adjetey Anang, a Ga Fantasy Coffin sculptor from Ghana, will be an artist in residence at Catlin Gabel November 7th to the 11th. We have invited him here to demonstrate his amazing art of sculpting a coffin out of wood in whatever shape a family feels best represents their deceased elder. He will be sculpting a woodworker’s hand plane, approximately 7’ long, 3’ wide, and 4’ high on the front deck of the barn. Please come ask him questions, watch him work, and feel free to participate in the building of the hand plane. Eric will give a slide lecture on Monday, November 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Gerlinger Auditorium
Two years ago, Michael de Forest, the LS Wood Shop teacher, traveled to Ghana for a summer and studied with Eric in his carpentry shop in Teshie, near Accra. There is also a proposed US trip planned for Ghana this summer July 29 to Aug 19th, 2012 where students will be working in the Kane Kwei Carpentry Shop with Eric.

Volunteer Your Artist Hat!
Hey parents, we are looking for volunteers to help lead the class art project for the upcoming Gambol, 2012. We need someone to fill the preschool leader position. The person in charge of the project will work with the students and on his or her own to help develop a collaborative piece of art to be auctioned off to one lucky family at this year’s Gambol Extravaganza.
The Gambol helps raise money for teacher development and financial aid, and is an incredible contribution to our fund raising efforts. If you, someone you know, or a group of two or three of you want to help coordinate your class’s art piece, please contact Tina Koehler, parent of Madalyne, and Student Art Project Chair at tina@vrnational.com, for more information or to answer any questions. We will be holding our first meeting the second week of November.

Jonathan and I thoroughly enjoyed the lively discussion this morning at the first Beehive Parent Group meeting after Friday Sing. For those who cannot attend, but are interested in the topics, I will put the handouts from each session in a holder on the credenza in the Well. Please help yourself!
It is not too early to invite grandparents and special friends to join us November 22nd (corrected) in the morning for a special time in the Beehive. Save the date! More details will follow.
We are looking forward to welcoming our first of the year Middle School classroom helpers next Wednesday morning. This is a long and wonderful tradition, where once a month four Middle Schoolers, who were Beehivers themselves once in some cases, come to spend the morning helping out. Our students grow to look forward to these mornings as they develop caring relationships with "the big kids". It is one of many things we love about being a P-12 school.
Next week I will talk a bit about what to expect at parent-teacher conferences. It is a welcome time in the year to pause in our active lives to put together our understandings of your child and think about next steps in his or her development as a learner and wonderful human being.

It was wonderful to see so many of you at Back to School Night on Wednesday! We look forward each year to sharing our plans and dreams for the year, the ways in which we look at learning, and the centrality of each child to the enterprise. In addition to home visits, Tell-Me conferences, and frequent casual chats in the Well, this night gives us the opportunity to do a more thoroughgoing presentation of our outlook as educators and as a school. Most of us who teach here wish we could have gone to school in our present-day Beehive. In a way, our wish is fulfilled each day as we have the pleasure of walking in the Beehive door in the early morning. Being where we want to be, teaching in the way we value, and having such wonderful parent partners makes our work a true delight and we hope that came through to you loud and clear.
Another treat is coming soon. Our counselor, Jonathan Weedman, and I will begin a parent group that will meet right after Friday Sing for those who have the time and inclination to stay. We will bring our coffee down to The Village and gather to listen to a presentation, talk about common parenting topics and to share ideas. The first meeting will be Friday Oct. 21.

I thoroughly enjoyed my "office in the Well" on Monday and Friday during the kindergarten Tell-Me Conferences. It is a pleasure to become better acquainted with all of you, whether you were awaiting a conference or picking up your Honeybee. We value your wisdom about your child and appreciate you sharing it with us - what makes your child tick, what lights the fire of enthusiasm, what approaches are successful, which ones to avoid, and what your hope and dreams are for your child. Being partners with you is such a powerful way to support our Beehivers.
Thank you!
First Friday Sing - Sept. 30, 8:30-9:00
Tips from Rhonda
Dear Beehive Parents,
Friday Sing is a wonderful and important part of the ways we create community in the Beehive.
Friday Sing is all about community and as we all gather in the Well, the room becomes alive with the buzz of connecting.
There are many ways people connect; but more and more research supports the theory that making music and making music together in a group is an extremely powerful expression of the joy of being human.
Before we join together in those first rousing renditions of "Clap, Clap, Clap your Hands" and "We've Been Waiting for You" here are a few tips for Friday Sing:
- Sing! Singing is a human birthright. So - "Just Do It". Every single child in the room is watching every single adult in the room for role model clues. If you sing, the children around you will sing. The level of participation and engagement you show is carefully observed by every child. (Don’t be embarrassed if you are not a “fancy” singer. It’s your enthusiasm and participation that are important.)
- All the Eagles and Honey Bees are asked to sit with their grown-ups, if they can come. The chairs are for grown-ups. Please hold your child on your lap, as chair space is quite limited.
- Please leave the steps for children whose parents are not able to come. They will be sitting together with their teachers on the steps, especially those directly opposite the Allen and Rhonda bench.
- If your Beehiver is thirsty, s/he can get a quick drink before Friday Sing begins. (It shouldn't be an issue, but it's okay of course to make an emergency trip to the bathroom.)
- Okay, please; cell phones on silent or vibrate. If you need to take the call, please step outside or into Tammy’s office. And NO TEXTING! If you need to take a quick photo to send to grandma and grandpa - that's fine, but remember, Friday Sing is about participation, not performance.
- Many of the songs at Friday Sing are exciting. There is jumping and hopping and clapping and the occasional wiggling of hips. Every once in a while a parent and child will get so caught up in the excitement that they forget they are at Friday Sing. Allen and I fervently hope that you will get tremendous enjoyment from singing with your children and with the other members of our Beehive community. At the same time, the children have a difficult time knowing how to behave if the excitement of a song turns into tickling and giggling and climbing up to sit on dad's head.
- Please feel free to quietly help the Eagles and Honey Bees around you to figure out the balance between excited and "over-the-limit" for Friday Sing behavior. If you aren't sure where that line is. Take a look at Allen or me. From where we sit at the front of the room, we have a pretty good view of everyone. When there is a child (or adult) who is being (perhaps) a bit too exuberant, you'll be able to see our attention being drawn that way. Both Allen and I try to be (mostly) discrete about it, but once in a while, you'll catch us making "teacher-eyes" at someone. (It usually involves very direct eye contact and an ever-so-slight shake of the head.)
- Finally, Did I remember to advise you to participate, participate, participate? Sing. Sing lots, Sing loud, Sing as though you were alone in the shower. Singing is good for your blood pressure, your breathing, your mind and your soul.
- (Oh, and if your coffee cup accidentally tips over, be sure to let Hannah or Tammy know about it after Friday Sing, so it can be cleaned before the stain sets in.)
Looking forward to singing with you soon,
Rhonda
Bus News - Green Route
For those riding the Green (Vista) route bus in the mornings here is news about a change in pick up time. Beginning the week of September 26th we will be moving the pick-up times at ALL stops 5 minutes earlier. This is being done because we have discovered that traffic changes have made it impossible for this bus to return to campus within the acceptable margin of time. Thank you and we are sorry for any inconvenience this might cause. Questions should be directed to Ed Sallia salliae@catlin.edu
