Winter Camping in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest
.jpg)
Yes, my friends...that is a homemade igloo, lit up under the clear night's sky by the eleven headlamps of our incredible group.
Due to a forecast for over two feet of fresh (but unstable) snow up on Mt. Rainier, we made a last minute change to our itinerary and headed up to the Trout Lake area at the base of Mt. Adams. With the goal getting into the backcountry, and avoiding the presence of snowmobilers, we headed to the more obscure Snow King Sno-Park, donned our snowshoes and tromped up the unplowed road before turning off into the woods and meadows of the area. Each spot looked better than the next as we scoured the landscape for a prime spot to build our winter camp. We settled on a beautiful meadow and tucked our bags in the tree wells so that we could roll up our sleeves and start putting in the hours of work that would be required to build a snow empire. Mike Wilson had brought his igloo maker, and the so-called "ICE BOX" was put into motion as we built a 12-foot diameter igloo from the ground up. Meanwhile, our kitchen area was excavated and tents were erected. The snow stopped for the evening, and that the stars came out in force. All eleven us packed into the igloo for a spaghetti dinner before we started a campfire outside in the snow.
We filled Sunday with an off-trail snowshoe excursion up to the top of a nearby butte, snowball fights, sweetened condensed milk (poured on every food item we had - winter camping requires high calorie input!), and burgers in the friendly cafe in Trout Lake before rolling back into Catlin.
Here are some photos from one of the program's classic winter trips. Enjoy.

Support media arts in Nepal!
Have you upgraded your digital still or video camera recently? Do you have weird cables lying around that you can't identify?
The Upper School Nepal trip group is doing an electronics drive to bring media production supplies to a not-for-profit media arts center in Nepal. We will be collaborating with Sattya Media Arts Collective to produce films with area youth in Kathmandu and helping Sattya develop a mobile outreach media production kit to bring their services youth in remote locations. Our hope is that we can help Sattya advance their outreach and establish a deeper partnership for future Catlin Gabel global studies programs.
Please consider donating your secondhand electronics to the Nepal group. Donations can be left with Nance Leonhardt in the lower level of the Upper School Library. A collection box will be placed outside her door. Please bring all donations by March 1, 2012.

Winterim catalog is coming soon!
Our annual keystone experiential education program – Winterim – will officially launch within the next 10 days, via the Winterim Catalog of this year’s offerings.
What is Winterim, exactly? For four days in March, Monday, March 19 through Thursday, March 22, the Upper School will suspend regular classes and offer a variety of experiential learning opportunities outside the regular curriculum. Winterim seeks to immerse students in intensive experiential learning to further their education, intellectually, interpersonally, and physically. Winterim strives to stretch students in new and profound ways, as it promotes different perspectives through participation and experience. Students have generated ideas and collaborated with faculty members since November to create 20+ Winterim offerings.
Once the catalog of these special activities is published, please review the offerings with your students, as they will sign up for their top eight choices during their regular C&C.
Contact Jessica Marlitt with any questions.
Admissions News
Re-enrollment contracts will be mailed soon. The Admissions Office is introducing an online re-enrollment system this year. Contracts are due back to admissions by February 17.

Catlin Gabel “Care Committee” is forming
The first meeting will be scheduled for February. School community members do a great job of helping each other through serious health problems and other difficulties, often providing meals, rides, etc. The purpose of the committee is to complement what is already happening by keeping school leaders and faculty informed of major issues affecting a family and finding ways for Catlin Gabel to provide additional support.
Please contact Kayla Reich, if you would like to play a part in defining the role of this developing committee.
