Graduation notes
Graduation DVD orders
If you are interested in purchasing a DVD of the ceremony, please use the form posted below.
- The DVD is produced by Dutton Productions
- Extra forms are available in the Upper School office.
- For auto billing to your final Catlin Gabel statement, forms must be completed and submitted in advance by June 5.
- FINAL deadline to order with payment by check attached is June 29.
Graduation Photos
Joseph Photographer will take individual, group, and class photographs in the Beehive on the afternoon of graduation. The order form is posted below.
- Photography begins at 3:30 p.m.
- Order form with payment and schedule details is posted below
- Forms and payment will be taken at the time of the photo
Special Seating Requests
If you have family members needing special assistance or accommodations for the graduation ceremony, please email Mary Medley indicating if your guest needs wheelchair access or limited-mobility access.
Used book return
The business office collects used books at the end of every school year. A comprehensive list of accepted books will be published soon. In the meantime, mark your calendars for these book return dates:
Thursday, June 7, 12:45 – 2 p.m. in the business office
Friday, June 8, 12:45 – 1:45 p.m. and 3 – 4:30 p.m. in the Cottage (just down the hall from the business office)
Monday, June 11, 1 – 2:30 p.m. in the Cottage
You can credit your student’s account for the books returned, or you may donate the value to the school’s book fund, which provides student financial aid for future book purchases. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Ann Rogers in the business office, 503-297-1894 ext. 357.

Chris Skrapits named district coach of the year
In his first season as head track and field coach, Chris was selected tops in the district.
Girls track team wins district championship
The district meet saw standout performances and personal records for a number of students. The boys placed 3rd – their best showing in years – and 17 students are advancing to state.

Sophomore Lawrence Sun selected for U.S. physics team
Lawrence is one of 20 finalists selected for the U.S. Physics Olympiad team. Each year, the American Association of Physics Teachers and the American Institute of Physics sponsor a competition for high school students to represent the United States at the International Physics Olympiad Competition.
The selection process began in early January when Lawrence took the F=ma exam. Approximately 400 top scorers on this first test advance to the semi-final round of competition.
The semi-final exam is used as the basis for selection of the 20 members of the U.S. Physics Team. These students, from schools all over the United States, travel to the University of Maryland-College Park at the end of May for the annual U.S. Physics Team Training Camp. There they engage in ten days of intense studying, testing, and problem solving.
At the end of that training camp, five students will be selected for the "Traveling Team." The Traveling Team will return for three additional days of intense laboratory work before they are ready for the International Event.

Freshman Valerie Ding wins silver at International Sustainable World Project Olympiad
Valerie won a silver medal in the energy category at ISWEEP-2012 in Houston, Texas. She was one of about 500 students from 68 countries and 44 states who had qualified as finalists in the ISWEEP-2012 Olympiad. Her project was "A Novel Quantum Mechanical Approach to Property Analysis and Energy Efficiency Algorithm for White-Light LEDs".
Junior Marina Dimitrov named Dean's List winner at robotics world championships
Flaming Chickens robotics team co-captain Marina Dimitrov was was one of 10 Dean’s List winners worldwide at the robotics championships in St. Louis. She is the first student from Oregon to win this award for leadership, commitment, technical expertise, and entrepreneurship. The award includes a weeklong trip to a FIRST leadership conference, personally written letters of recommendation to the colleges of her choice, and $1,000 toward the team’s registration fees for next year’s world championships.

Chris Skrapits selected assistant coach of the year
The Oregon Athletic Coaches Association has selected eighth grade science teacher and ace cross-country coach Chris Skrapits as the assistant coach of the year in Oregon for all sports categories in the 3A classification.
PE teacher and coach John Hamilton submitted this nomination:
Chris came to Catlin Gabel in 1996. He had been a cross-country runner during high school and college. Not long after starting to work on our campus he connected with me to see if he could participate in our team workouts. He became a frequent participant in many of our on campus sessions, and eventually began to join us for trail runs.
In 2004 we lost our assistant coach, and invited Chris to become an official part of our program. He was more than ready, and eagerly accepted the offer. Having him become a permanent member of our [coaching] staff has proved to be a huge boost to the program on many levels. He helps me organize the overview of the full season training schedule. He in charge of all our team warm-up drills prior to all training and racing sessions. This means his voice is the only one that the racers hear as they enter the chute on race day. He has continued to be an active participant in most of our training sessions and leads all the abdominal work at the end of each training session. I will ask him to step out of a session when I need his help with timing, or watching for form and tactical adjustments we might want to make. The entire team loves the energy, enthusiasm, knowledge, experience, and the joy he brings to the team.
During the eight years Chris has been with the team we have grown from 24 participants to 38, a 55% increase. More than 14% of Upper School students are on the cross-country team. During Chris’ tenure as assistant coach, the program has achieved a level of success that we had never before experienced. The team won seven out of eight district titles. Racing in Eugene at LCC, the Catlin Gabel team has finished in the top two for consecutive years, runners-up four times, and state champions four times.
