Summer trips to India and China widened horizons

Months of preparation during the school year culminated in two groups of Upper School students traveling to India and China this summer.

Students traveling to India focused on world religions while making their way from New Delhi through Agra and Jhansi to Varanasi. They spent time with host families from Varanasi’s Rajghat Besant School and did service work in a public hospital. Thanks go to trip leaders Cindy Beals, Mariam Higgins, and Tony Stocks. The China trip, led by Beining Hu and Li-Ling Cheng, focused on intense study of Mandarin Chinese language and culture. Morning hours were dedicated to language immersion, classes followed by afternoons at some of China’s historic cultural sites. Catlin Gabel students were welcomed in homestays by Chi Ping High School families in the Shandong Province. Read journal blogs.

Summer international transition day bonds students from around the world

Our new international students spent some time on August 21 with returning School Year Abroad students and others involved in Catlin Gabel’s global education initiative. Beyond welcoming our new students from Botswana, Costa Rica, and Germany, the day’s agenda centered on generating interest in cultural perspective and experience. Find writing from some of our exchange students on the Telling Our Stories page of the website

Global education website development
The new website features an expanded view of our global education initiative. Most notable is the Cultural Transitions Interview Project and the Telling Our Stories pages that chronicle the firsthand perspectives of our community members as they transition between Catlin Gabel and other cultures.

Introducing the Viewfinder Global Film Series

Maybe you don’t have the opportunity to travel abroad. That does not mean you can’t explore the world. The global education program is proud to launch the Viewfinder Global Film Series. All community members are encouraged to attend the monthly film screenings and faculty-led discussions. Several films will be shown concurrently in Gerlinger and Middle School classrooms. (Most films are not rated, so parent discretion is advised.)

The inaugural film night is Thursday, October 8, at 6:30 p.m. Films shown will focus on India and China, connecting to the Upper School students and teachers who traveled to those countries this summer.
