March 2011 Congrats!
Senior Rebecca Garner was awarded the Gold Key in art, the highest regional award given annually in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program, sponsored by New York’s Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. As a result of Rebecca’s Gold Key standing, her artwork will be forwarded to New York City for national judging. Rebecca also won two Honorable Mentions in drawing. Three other Catlin Gabel students were also honored with awards: Senior Kashi Tamang won seven Silver Key awards in ceramics and glass, drawing, photography, mixed media, and painting. Senior Lynne Stracovsky won a Silver Key in drawing and junior Andrea Michalowsky won an Honorable Mention in sculpture. Founded in 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing program is the oldest, longest-running, and most prestigious recognition program for student achievement in the visual arts and creative writing in the United States.
Six seniors are National Merit Finalists: Rohisha Adke, Morgan Henry, Paul Krums, Stephen Lezak, Vighnesh Shiv, and Morgann Turkot.
Junior Danielle Shapira’s Taekwondo poomsae team won first at the Oregon junior competition. They will compete at nationals in July.
Junior violinist Holly Kim won the district solo contest. She will participate in the contest in April.
Junior Eli Wilson Pelton qualified for the state Thespian Festival based on solo and duo comic and dramatic performances he gave at the Northwest regional competition.
Freshman Lawrence Sun is a semifinalist for the U.S. Physics Olympiad team due to his score on the F=ma exam. He is one of 350 semifinalists in the nation.
This was a great year for varsity basketball. The boys team made it to the state finals for the first time since 1982. Senior Alex Foster, who has signed to play at Emory University next year, was elected First Team All-League. The girls team had a stellar season, too, with juniors Esichang McGautha being elected League Player of the Year and First Team All-League. Mariah Morton was elected First Team All-League. Senior Eloise Miller and junior Cammy Edwards were elected Honorable Mention All-League.
Fifth grader Aditya Sivakumar won third place in the elementary category at the national MTNA music composition competition.
After studying the geography of Europe in the fall, the 4th graders in Rebecca Plaskitt’s class wanted to showcase their investigations so they created a museum and gift shop. The children invited guests to make small donations in exchange for items the students had collected and made. The gift shop raised $109, which the class donated to the Oregon Humane Society, Make a Wish Foundation, and Mercy Corps’ Comfort with Kids program.
Upper School math teacher Lauren Shareshian wrote a paper that has been accepted by the journal Physical Review E. The paper is about the scaling behavior of oscillations arising in delay-coupled optoelectronic oscillators.
Upper School Spanish teacher Roberto Villa attended the Pedagogia 2011 international conference in Cuba. The Cuban Ministry of Education and other international agencies including UNESCO sponsored the conference. Roberto presented a short paper on differentiated instruction in the modern language classroom. He was one of two teachers from the U.S. among the 3,000 people from 35 countries.
