Portland Urban Planning and Leadership Institute
High school students from Catlin Gabel, St. Mary’s Academy, and Marshall High School teamed up this summer for Catlin Gabel’s four-week Portland Urban Planning and Leadership Institute (PUPLI).
They spent two weeks meeting with Portland leaders and learning how the “City that Works” actually works. They spent time in the Lents and Mississippi neighborhoods discussing gentrification, learning about urban renewal at the Portland Development Commission, and providing feedback on the city of Portland’s climate action plan at the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability.
For the second half of the program, the students engaged in a service-learning project that put their newfound knowledge to the test. They worked with professional urban planners, developers, college professors, and Lincoln High School’s principal to create surveys and gain understanding about how Lincoln can best serve the community. The PUPLI students will present their findings to Goose Hollow and Lincoln community leaders. The report and a slideshow titled “Heart of the Community? A New Lincoln High School as the Center of a 20-minute Neighborhood” will be available soon.
