School Supplies

All 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will need the following supplies on Tuesday, September 8 (the first full day of classes):

Before reading on, a quick note. Please recycle school supplies from previous years that are in good working order—we encourage this. We have tried to make the list manageable and realistic.

Please note that this list does not include subject-specific books. These will be distributed throughout the year as needed.

All supplies should be clearly marked with your name and contact information.

    * Pencils
    * Black/blue ballpoint pens
    * A 3-ringed binder (Sixth graders will also need six 2-pocket folders that will serve as subject dividers.)
    * Lined paper. Again, recycled paper is perfectly fine for most assignments, and often teachers will have a supply on hand.
    * Flash drive to hold and carry electronic data between home and school.

    * Calculator:

      6th and 7th grade math students will receive (and be charged for) a math packet, which includes a Texas Instruments TI-30XS MultiView Scientific Calculator, rulers, a compass, protractor, eraser, and pencils.

    8th graders taking algebra will need a TI-83 or 84 Plus calculator that they will also use in 8th grade science and throughout high school at Catlin Gabel. If you are buying a new calculator, please purchase the TI-84 as this is the calculator of choice in the upper school.

      * All 8th grade students are required to purchase a quad spiral tablet (with graph paper).

      PLEASE write your name on the calculator by scratching it in or using an engraving pencil. In addition, with so many students using the same calculator, adorn the cover with distinctive art so that yours is easily identified. Consider your calculator needs over the course of two or three years. If calculators are a financial hardship, please let Paul Andrichuk know.

    * Glue stick
    * Small set of colored pencils
    * Small 3-holed pouch/box for supplies
    * Individual classes might require additional supplies, such as red pens, highlighters, or rulers. Students will hear about these in the first days of the school year.
    * PE shoes (no black soles) to be left at school
    * PE shorts, shirt, and socks to be left at school, other than when they are brought home to be washed.

We encourage you to contact Paul if you need assistance with supplies at andrichukp@catlin.edu, or 503-297-1894 ext. 368.

These will be supplied for you by teachers:

Things that you will get from your teachers throughout the year (you will be billed for these items through the business office):

    * An agenda assignment book
    * Used or new textbooks (let teachers know which you prefer so discuss this as a family.)
    * Sketchbook (6th grade)
    * Science journal (6th grade), science binder and supplies (7th grade), and lab book (8th grade)
    * Please note the math supplies (above) that will be supplied by teachers.

These items will help you if you have them at home:

   * Dictionary/thesaurus
    * Language translation dictionaries—French, Japanese, Chinese, or Spanish
    * Extra paper and graph paper
    * Compass, protractor, ruler (metric/standard), and calculator

    * A computer with internet and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint). If you are going to buy a laptop, please contact Daisy Steele in IT prior to purchase. WE REQUIRE ALL STUDENT FAMILIES TO PURCHASE LAPTOPS THROUGH CATLIN GABEL. We have coordinated with both Apple and Lenovo to receive education discounts and features not available to the general public.
