Professional development is a priority at Catlin Gabel. The founding philosophy of the school clearly states that Catlin Gabel is meant to be an educational laboratory. We want to create and sustain a culture that supports the vitality and excitement about one's work and thoughtful risk-taking. An ongoing commitment to professional growth and openness to possibility are valued and expected of those who work here.

The overarching goal of professional development for the faculty is to foster inspired learning by supporting the investigation of ideas and practices in order to expand teaching repertoires and enhance student learning.

The professional development program will focus on:

  • Fostering a community where people are continually learning
  • Nurturing new and expansive patterns of thinking
  • Promoting professional growth, and personal satisfaction and renewal
  • Facilitating a collegial culture of critical inquiry and dialogue
  • Addressing individual, collegial, and institutional interests
  • Linking professional growth and assessment

The Faculty 500 Professional Development Fund is available to faculty and Benefit Level 3 administrators. Each faculty member has $500 to spend on professional development each year. This fund is intended to provide opportunities for faculty members to choose professional growth experiences that will serve both their interests and the goal of the program as outlined above. Personal travel expenses and most purchases of work-related equipment are not included in this fund. These funds are prorated according to FTE.

Requests for professional development funds must be pre-approved by the division head or supervisor. The $500 funds accounts are maintained in the business office. Faculty 500 funds may accumulate up to $1500. If you carry the maximum balance on July 1 you will not receive additional funds until the next fiscal year. This flexibility in funding allows faculty members to plan ahead for a major professional development project or to use the funds for smaller expenses at any time as the need arises. Generally speaking, the Faculty 500 funds are to be used first before seeking other school sources for funding professional development. Any unused funds are forfeited upon termination or resignation.
