日本語二年生(Japanese II)The topics for this year will include “restaurant”, “food”, “giving location”, and “weather”.  Beginning grammatical structures and vocabulary will be reviewed as well as greatly expanded upon.  All students will be assessed at the end of the year, and are expected to know approximately 50 new kanji that are related to the topics listed above.

日本語三年生Japanese IIIStudents will be expected to continue using the language in a culturally appropriate manner.  They will practice strategies for compensating when one doesn’t understand a spoken or written message.  They will also practice making appointments, asking instructions, and giving explanations. In addition, all students will memorize 101 adjectives, so they can add more detailed information to their conversations and written work. 

日本語四年生Japanese IV The course focuses on helping students master the fundamentals of oral and written expression. Students will also participate in debates and give speeches to the class on topics such as “family”, “fashion”,  and “visiting the doctor”, to help improve their skills in oral expression.  Students also will have the opportunity to participate in the Living Language Experience if they receive a high enough score on an oral and written test.

日本語五年生Japanese V HonorsJapanese honors class is taught 100% in Japanese. This course is designed to polish students’ Japanese listening, speaking, and writing abilities. Outside of class students will have the opportunity to be teacher assistants and teach Japanese to high school students. Throughout the year Keigo, a difficult Japanese polite language style involving humble and honorific styles of speech, will be introduced and practiced.  More advanced kanji characters will be intensively studied as well. Students will be encouraged to take SAT II and AP examinations.

姉妹校-岐阜北高校 Sister School In Japan - Gifu-Kita High SchoolSince 1992 The Catlin Gabel School has had a sister school relationship with Gifu-Kita High School in Japan. There is an exchange of students between both schools. Students from Gifu-Kita come to Catlin Gabel  in the winter time and share their language and culture with our community. Catlin Gabel students enrolled in third, fourth, and fifth year Japanese had the opportunity to travel to the visit our sister school during the summer. Students who go on the summer trip tour around Japan for a week and then for the second week aboard, participate in a home stay with a Japanese family, attend Gifu-Kita high school classes, and help prepare and participate in the school’s cultural festival day (bunkasai) as well as sports day (taiikusai).  The relationship with Gifu-Kita High School is highly treasured.

全米優等生協会 The Japanese National Honor Society (for Secondary Schools) Students who have completed at least one year of high school Japanese classes, have maintained outstanding, excellent or nearly excellent levels in Japanese, and have maintained an overall GPA of 3.0 will be eligible for membership into the Japanese National Honors Society.
