After completing our Moon Cake unit, the class learned to use interrogatives to create and answer questions, and developed a skit that incorporated the nine question words.  Currently, we are studying a new unit with a focus on describing the contents, functions and appearance of their houses and rooms.  Each student uses a shoebox to create their ideal room.  Students will learn to use directional words to describe the content of these shoebox rooms.  For their end of unit project, students will do a Power Point presentation about their house.  They will take pictures of their homes and create a PPT slide show to present in class.  This will be the students' first PPT presentation in the Chinese class.  During presentations, we will recycle the interrogatives they have learned to create authentic questions for the presenters to answer.  After this unit ends, we will "move into" the community and learn about the neighborhood.  The key communicative functions being sought include being able to describe, and to ask and answer questions.

After the 7th Grade Chinese students learned the ingredients and tools used, and steps to bake moon cakes, students baked the cakes on September 28, having a great time. We are wrapping up the unit with student-produced baking show, and learning interrogatives to ask and answer questions related to their moon cake baking experience. These interrogatives include who/whom, whose, what, what time, when, why, which, where and how. Being able to initiate questions allows our students to take on a more active role during interpersonal communication. We will move onto the next unit: My House after this. In the new unit, students will learn to describe their house, rooms, household items, directions and daily routines related to their house. For the end of unit project, they will use a PPT presentation, floor plan of their house to describe their house.

Course Description

Students in the 7th grade Mandarin Chinese class continue to develop the ability to communicate about themselves and their immediate environment using dsicrete sentences containing basic language structures. This communication is evidenced in three modes—interpersonal, interpretative and presentational—with emphasis on the ability to communicate orally. Students continue to explore and study the themes of personal and family life, school life, social life, and community life.
